By forming a system of co-op- erative packing plants we will not be under the cloud of public politi, cal opinion. This is a big step for farmers of Ontario to take, as it will' pro, vide for the slaughter. of not only hogs but also for cattle and lambs. To give you some idea of the speed with which an organization of this kind can grow,, the general manager, Mr. Courteau, of the Quebec Co- operative packing plants, told us that in a matter of five or six years this enterprise has grown from nothing' to the point that it is now slaughtering 27 per cent of all the livestock produced in Quebec, and within Live years expects to be process- ing 75 per 'cent of the Quebec live- stock. In spite of obstacles and top competitive prices, this Co-op re turned $900,000 to its ' members, as well as retaining $450,000 for expansion. These figures could be multiplied by four if all livestock had been marketed this way. The big news of the past wee was the decision of the Ontari Hog Producers to sponsor the for motion of Farmers' Allied Mea Enterprises. By taking the firs letter of each word, we hay FAME, which will be the brand name under which the top quality ll products of this organization wi be sold. By making this decision you representatives have made it pos sible for your products to be sold through an organization which you th producer, ,can control. You will notice that I said you can control. Whether you do contro it or not will depend' on whether or not you are willing to take an interest in it, keep up to date on the information, and offer your suggestion.s for improvements. In the past we have relied on Government for the power to con- trol the selling of our products and in many cases this has been a decided benefit. However, it has become very apparent that this is not a solid foundation for a long term of years since governments can change their policy, or even be defeated. Further, your fate in marketing under government legislation may be determined on an altogether different question. Let us suppose that at an elec- tion one party says that if it is elected Hydro rates will be cut In two, but also that it will with- draw the farm marketing legisla- tion. The other party maintains that Hydro rates should be in- creased and that the farm mar- keting legislation should be ex- tended. Employer: '"You were twenty minutes late again this morning. BRITISH MORTGAGE PLANS NEW HOME The new British Mortgage & Trust Company 'Head Office build- ing in Stratford will combine a handsome design with usefulness of structure. Situated on the large southeast corner of Ontario and Church Streets, with an exterior of granite, limestone and glass, this modern office building, to be floodlit at night, will greatly en- hance the appearance of Strat- ford's district. The former building on the site has been demolished and the area is cleared for the initial phase of construction. The building will have four storeys and basement, with a large penthouse on top containing me- chanical and air - conditioning equipment. The entire structure will cover over 36,000 square feet of floor space. British' Mortgage Trust Company will occupy all the building except the fourth floor which vvill be leased. The large 'double plate glass windows will let in an abundance of natural light, as well as provide beautiful views of the Huron Street sone bridge and the Shakespearen gar- dens. Among the special features of the building will be a large public Board room on the main floor for the use of organizations in this community who need a central meeting place. A lourege for cus- tomers will be located just off the main foyer where British Mortgage patrons can r9 ---or meet their friends. Ample facilities' for parking will be provided. There will be space for over 50 cars in the parking garage, with easy access from both Church and Erie Streets, making it convenient for motorists to reach the British Mortgage and park their cars while doing busi- ness there. Wilfrid P. Gregory, Q.C., execu- tive vice-presldent and managing directors, remarked: "The con- struction of a new head office building by British Mortgage & Trust Company is necessary be- cause of the continuing increase in our volume of business. Fur- thermore, it is our constant de- sire to provide the finest facilities possible for those who do business with us. This we shall be able to do upon completion of our present plans. "This new building will be the fourth home of British Mortgage & Trust Company during its 82 years. A small office on Market Square and later an office on Downie Street were the first Strat- ford locations of the Company. In 1924, the present building at 10 Albert Street, was purchased and renovated to become an office building that was modern and ahead of its time. "Similarly, the new building at 1 Ontario Street, with the latest methods and materials used in its construction, will provide a modern replacement for accom- modation that has become inade- quate. It will be a pleasant place to do business, and wilt' serve the Company and community for many years to come." Plan Open House At Church Centre United Church congregations throughout London Conference are being invited to the first annual open house at Westminster Col- lege, the new United Church cen- tre at the University of Western Ontario, this Sunday. Dr. D. A. Shanks, chaplain, said every minister in the conference had been asked to invite his con- gregation to the open house. Buildings will be open from 2 to 4 p.m., and from 7 to 9 p.m., Oct. 30. The former London Hunt Club, property is on the west •side of Richmond Street, between the fourth concession and Richmond Street bridge. Daily worship services are al- ready being held in the chapel and religious, knowledge lectures are to begin soon. The college houses 36 men and 41 women. Stu- dents are registered from every county in Western Ontario. Dr. Shanks said members of the board of directors will attend Sun- day to guide visitors and answer questions. CONFIRM CONTRACT ARRANGEMENT FOR ONTARIO HOSPITAL IN HURON • Ontario, Public Works Minister Ray Connell confirmed this week the award of the general trades contract for construction of a 300 - bed Ontario Hospital at Goderich, to Anglin-Norcoss Ontario Co., Ltd., Toronto. This firm, Wfiich will soon complete construction of the 1,250 -bed Cedar Springs Hos- pital School for Retarded Children, was lowest of eight bidders, with a price of $3,460,000. Mr. Connell said work will start almost immediately and will pro- ceed throughout the winter to aid the seasonal employment situation in Huron County. Included in this contract are services and facili- ties to allow for future expansion of the hospital according to local needs.. The Goderich hospital is part of a new concept in the treatment of mental illness. Mr. Connell de. scribed it as being more of the nature of a , home for the aged than the popular concept of a men- tal hospital. It will consist of a -series of single storey cottages joined to two-storey administration and service wings, yet there will be no long corridors or institu- tional atmosphere. Interior decor will be bright and attractive, with direct access from cottages jo courtyards. The site is aboilt two and a half miles south of Goderich on No. 21 Highway, with 3,000 feet of front- age on Lake Huron. ALL KINDS of INSURANCE w. E.
