"'aFARM NEWS .OF_IIURON -._..
Farmers are still planting fall
wheat; some fields of wheat are
showing green. A few people have
filled their silo, but most farmers
are waiting until corn matures
more. Grain corn is beginning to
dent, but good weather is required
to get the 'moisture down. Fall
pastures are looking better, -but
•plowing is difficult due to lack of
moisture.

provide lots of parking.
The alleys have been installed
by Brunswick of Canada. Every-
thing is completely automatic, and
so efficient are the pin -setting de-
vice's that practically no sound can
be heard as they tirelessly carry
out their task. Bowls are return-
ed by an underground duct.
A modern coffee bar and dress-
ing rooms are designed for the
convenience of bowling enthusi-
asts.
Mr. and Mrs. Kelly come to
Seaforth from Stratford. They will
live in the Sproat residence, Gode-
rich and Sperling Street. Mrs. Kel-
ly. is the former Catherine McIver,
a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm.
McIver, of St. Columban.
Since bowling got under way
Saturday, plans are being complet-
ed for the operation of several
local leagues. Organization of
these is expected to be completed
within a few days and will pro-
vide plenty of activity during the
fall and winter months. Open
bowling is held each weekend.
Each alley contains over half -a -
mile of maple and pine and some
8,000 nails and is the result of
hundreds of hours of work by vet-
eran craftsmen and skilled tech-
nicians.' -
At Brunswick of Canada Dixie
plant specially treated wood for
the Seaforth Bowling Lanes was
first cut tb tongue and groove
form. Sections one and one-eighth
inches wide and two and three-
quarter inches deep were then fit-
ted together with the open grain
edge uppermost — for superior
strength.
The half -a -mile of wood in each
lane weighs more than 3,000 pounds
and consists of •'1,582 feet of pine.
A hard, tough wood, maple is
used at both ends of the lane where
it has to_ withstand the impact of
the bowling ball and flying pins. In
the middle of the lanes' the open
grain of the pine holds the spin-
ning ball to its straight or curv-
ing path. It gives the bowler the
control needed for accurate shots
and high scores.
Like those of tennis courts and
hockey rinks, the dimensions and
surface of a bowling lane must
conform to the specifications laid
down by an organization that gov-
erns the game. The specifications
for bowling lanes are those of the
American Bowling Congress which
supervises all international bowl-
ing tournaments.
.They require the overall bed
length. from feu' line to Pit edge
—to be 62 feet and 10 and three4.,
sixteenths of an inch. The width'
of the lane has to be at least 41
inches, but not more than 42. Fin-
ally, the surface of the lane must
be free of any depression, ,groove,
high spot or tilt in excess of .forty
one -thousandths of an inch.
Thousands of falling balls and
crashing pins will subject the lanes
to rough treatment during the
1060.61 season, Good materials and
sound construction, however, .will
n
enable them to take it and always
.provide each bowler with a .per
feet playing surface:.
During the last five years the.
number of bowling ,lances in the
country has more than doubled -
Thousands of new fans have tars-
en up the sport—for fun, relaxa-
tion 'and healthful exercise. •It is
estimated that one out of every

117,000 lanes- fire now in use in
