Winners were announced Monday night at a special meeting in Clin- ton arranged by D. H. Miles, Hur- on County agricultural representa- tive, in the agricultural office board room. Mr. Allan, who was the 1958 world hay champion, placed sec- ond in last year's pasture compe- tion. He won this year's award on the basis of five acres of regular pasture and 11 acres of aftermath, with a carrying capacity of 17 cows and 11 calves. - Last year's winner, Alvin Bet- ties, RR 2, Bayfield, who. was this year's competition judge, chaired Monday night's meeting, and com- mented on the scores of the par- ticipants. Runners-up were William Turn- bull, Ethel, and Joseph A. Bab- cock, Londesboro. The winner will compete in the Lake Huron -Georgian Bay zone competition, judging of which is expected to be completed by next Wednesday. C. H. Kingsbury, of the soils and crop branch, Ontario Agricultural College, Guelph, will be judge. T b e provincial competition, which this year includes five zones is to be judged October 3. 4 and 5, Mr. Kingsbury, who was at Mon- day's meeting, commenting on Mr. Allan's pasture plots, said: "Dur- ing the early part of the season Mr. Allan had one acre of pasture carrying five or six head of stock. Later in the season it dropped down to about two—which is nor- mal. He did not feed any grain, and his cantle are in good shape. "The five -acre field (regular pasture) has not been seeded for about eight years, because its fer- tility is very high, with the result being good production. His cattle run outside the year round, and he uses grass silage feed in the winter. "Mr. Allan makes use of Dup wits silage, which gives him an early aftermath," Mr. Kingsbury added.
