Developments' outside Canada may affect farm production and prices here more iij" the future than has Men the ease recently, according to the Bank of Mont- real's Business Review for May, just issued. The review draws attention to the recent decline in beef prices as .both Canadian and U.S herds have increased in size. It also points to the fact that pork prices have been 'ewer since the intro- duction of deficiency .payments, noting that U.S. hogs can now enter Canada fqr the first time since 1952. So far as wheat is concerned, it is essential to consider sales pro- spects in a world perspective, the review says, especially in the light of postwar gains in the U.S. share of the world market. Total wheat exports for the cur- rent crop year ate expected to ap- proach the previous year's level of almost 300 million busheds, the B of M says. This would mean that combined export and domestic re- quirements would exceed the esti- mated total crop,,so that a further reduction in the "carryover" could be achieved. Livestock Adjustments In contrast' 'to wheat farmers, who are interested in world-wide supply and demand, Canadian live- stock producers are concerned al- most exclusively with the Canadian and U.S. markets, the review adds. BETHEL WMS, WA The Bethel WMS and WA meet- ings were held Thursday afternoon at the h.pme of Mrs. Alex Dennis. The president opened the meeting by reading an item on how the hymn, "Jesus Lover Of My Soul," came to be written, and then the hymn was sung, Mrs, Glen Mc- Nichol read the Scripture and gave ,the comments on it, and Mrs. Ralph McNichol led in prayer. As Father's Day is coming up on Sun- day, June 19, Mrs, Ed. Regale read a poem entitled, "Dad." - The president introduced the guest speaker, Miss Jennie Hogg,. who gave a very wonderful talk on "Hope," and at the close of her talk Mrs, Stanley Hellen sang "Whispering Hope." An item from the Missionary Monthly, called "The •Small Branch," was read by Tennie Dennis, and Mrs. William Roe read an article concerning neighbors, "The Canadian Eski- mos." - Mrs. Charles Boyd, Mrs. Percy Dalton and Mrs. Ross Leeming will have charge of the July meeting, which is the children's meeting. Mrs. William Dennis had charge of the WA business. The minutes of the last meeting were read and the roll call showed 20 members present and a number of visitors. The manse committee reported, and $15A0 was voted to the manse fund. A wiener roast was planed for the last of June. Leftover sandwiches need not be discarded. Brush them with melted butter and saute to a golden brown on each side. They're quite deli- cious served in this way. As it is, U.S. 'herds aree increas- ing steadily and as a result theca may be a further drop in Canadian cattle exports south of the border. In hog production, the review notes that the embargo against importation of American animals imposed in 1952 has now been lift- ed. As a result, it can be expected that U.S. pork prices will influence Canadian prices. Even so, the outstanding single factor for Cdnadian hog produeexs today is the new deficieney-pay- ment system, the B of M believes. Now four months old, the plan has been at least partly responsible for hog marketings falling from the highest -ever figure of 262,000 in the week immediately prior to the start of the plan to the subsequent average of only 148,000 weekly. But, continues the review, "do- mestic consumption of pork in 1959 was at a very high level, nearly 20 per cent above 1958, no doubt as a result of relatively low prices. With prices still lower in 1960 to date, domestic consumption has been maintained at close to last year's level." Adequate Milk In dairy farming, the badk says a broad Ineasure of price support is accorded to the industry "to en- sure Income stability to milk pro- ducers and an adequate and con- tinuous supply of milk. "In addition, price supports have been used to influence the pattern of milk utilization in order to ef- fect a balance between output of different dairy products," and re- cent changes in the structure of price supports have partially achieved this objective, the 13 of M review adds.
