CARL HEMINGWAY Happy N yv Year! , I hope. 'Whether 1960 will be a happy year Lor farmers or not is open to ques- tion, but I am sure that, for those of us taking an active part in farm naaanizatiea work, it will be Ins teresting. The following problems will take up a great deal of time in 1960: The Turkey Producers'. vote and action on the results; land acquisi. tion negotiations; unemployment inserance 'for farmers; crop hi, surance; the bog vote recently an- nounced , fox early summer; white bean marketing; tiegf marketing; poultry products -marketing; milk pooling; and, finally, controlled farm production will be thrown in- to the confusion if any- strong, un- ity on the part of farmers is dis- covered in the other contraversies. To carry on all the work involv- ed in. thele activities, farm, organ-, izations for the mpst part must work on very limited budgets. From time to time we hear criti- cism of the Federation for not put- ting into force a program that will return to Agriculture a satisfac- tory: income; but it isn't that sim- ple. The Federations• have made many' recommendations to Gov-. ernment that have not been put into effect. In other eases finances prevented work being done. Most of all, strife between groups has Weakened the position of farm- ers: What will 1960 bring? Will this year find that farmers are basic- ally one and that one general pol- icy will be good for all, or will the suttle propaganda - that is - being disemminated succeedain bringing about the disintegration of farm ,organiza• ions?. I doubtthat farmers will aceom- push the former, completely, but I. have hopes that advancements will'.be made. It --will bedisas- tarous for farmers and detrimen- tal to all Canadians if the opposi- tion is successful in attaining the latter. At this 'time next year,we may look back on failures and blame our leadership, but our 'greatest enemy.. is the indifference of the individual, Let us hope that this 'will not happen, and that next year will be able to look back on successes and -again these will not be the result of your leadership,. but rather due to the support giv- en by the members: WINTHROP Mr. and Mrs. N.
