Three locals went head-to-
head to see who would be
crowned the 2016 Senior Fall
Fair Ambassador and have the
privilege of wearing the green
and white banner across the
front of their attire to prove it.
Last Thursday at the Seaforth
Agriplex hundreds of locals
were welcomed to witness a
competition to see who's who in
the agriculture sector.
According to one of the three
judges, Doug Yeo, when choos-
ing the victor, a competitor
must show a substantial
amount of evidence that they
do possess the skills needed to
be the face of the Seaforth Agri-
cultural Society (SAS).
"We are looking for someone
who is a good spokesperson
and will be a good ambassador
for this particular fair," con-
firmed Yeo after the winner was
chosen.
"They must have good knowl-
edge in the agriculture
division."
As stated by the SAS's web-
site, this event isn't restricted to
females only, men can jump to
the task as well. The only
requirement is that they be
between 17 and 23 years of age
as of August 1, 2016.
All the contestants were
interviewed by the trio of judges
with the expectation of per-
forming a three to five minute
speech as well as give a short
answer to an unrehearsed farm-
ing question.
Kyra Pietschmann, 17, from
Seaforth, embarked on a rather
diverse motive in presenting
her speech. She admitted to not
knowing much about agricul-
ture, however she affirmed that
she was more than willing to
learn.
From the left is Kyra Pietschmann, Nicole Whyte and Leah Martens. The
three locals competed in the 2016 Senior Seaforth Fall Fair Ambassador
contest last Thursday.
Seaforth Fall Fair Ambassador
SF
A farmer is a person
who is outstanding
in their field,"
— said the 2016 Senior
Seaforth Fall Fair
Ambassador, Nicole Whyte
"I know there's a lot of farm-
ers in this area and we have
great soil, so I've been told. But
if you were to ask me a question
about agriculture, nine times
out of 10, I couldn't answer,"
remarked Pietschmann Sep-
tember 16.
Even though Huron County
is such a staple in the farming
industry, Pietschmann said not
much has been taught to her in
secondary school and sug-
gested that there be elective
credits relating to farming in the
education system.
"By the age of 10, I already
knew what it meant to be a
farmer," said 17 -year-old Nicole
Whyte. "It means lots of time
spent in barns and in fields."
She ended the speech with a
quote from her grandfather, "a
farmer is a person who is out-
standing in their field:'
Leah Martens spoke about
the community and how hospi-
table the people are from Sea -
forth and the area.
"What I'm trying to say is Sea -
forth is inclusive, you don't have
to have the address of Seaforth
or Egmondville Ont. to be con-
sidered part of the community.
You just need a friendly face
and a little small tall< and you
will be welcomed with open
arms," said Martens who is a
lifeguard at the Seaforth Lions
Pool.
Soon after the three said their
speeches, the judges left to
come up with an official deci-
sion as to who would be the
2016 Senior Fall Fair Ambassa-
dor. After several minutes they
came out with the announce-
ment that Nicole Whyte was the
winner.
Past champion, Maranda
Klaver passed the torch and
crowned Whyte.
"This is a year of experiences
that I will never forget, I have
had many fun times with the
agriculture board. I can't
believe everything I have
accomplished throughout my
year as ambassador," said
Klaver while holding back the
tears. "I started out as a Junior
Ambassador and I'm more
than thankful that I have been
able to enjoy the best of both
worlds as a Senior
Ambassador."
" The Fair and Agricultural
Society have become a part of
me."
