The legacy of the Doig's
competitive edge lies consist-
ently in golf and at plus -50 -
years of age, Ian captured the
2016 Seniors Championship
in Hamilton Ont. last month.
Defending the title from
2015, this year the two-day
tournament was held at the
Chedoke Civic Golf Course.
Doig knew he had to put some
friendships aside and play to
the best of his abilities to be
the victor for a second consec-
utive year.
"I was solid all the way
around, I didn't have any
hole or any particular spot
where I felt was difficult or
(on the other hand), I didn't
have any spots where I was
phenomenal," Doig, 55, said
in a phone conversation
September 8.
It was the third week of
August and all the competi-
tors knew the possibility of
rain that could brace the
region during a tournament
they thought would be 36
holes.
Optimism is all the group
of golfers had in their bag of
clubs, which wasn't enough
as it poured the second day
resulting in the champion-
ship being reduced to 27
holes.
The PGA of Ontario Sen-
iors Championship has been
an individual stroke play
since 1980 and it's somewhat
easier as it's contested with
no cuts.
The first day Doig kept the
pressure on the others chal-
lenging by shooting a 68. The
final day came with an
extensive rain postpone-
ment. Battling neck -to -neck
with Bob Beauchemin and
along with the weather cut-
ting the holes in half, it was
now or never for the born
and raised Seaforth native.
Shooting a 35 overall and
then hitting in a birdie for
the 27th hole, earned him a
spot in the sudden -death
playoff as five players tied at
two -under.
Everything came down to
the third playoff hole where
Doig hit the ball off a 176 -
yard par -three directly onto
the green for a near hole in
one, according to the PGA of
Ontario. He used his putter
to hit the ball in for a birdie,
making him the champion
once again.
September 6, Doig again
shot a 68, this time at the
Seniors Fall Champion-
ship where he finished
second.
The tournament that he
has his hopes of winning will
be held at the world's most
historic golf course for the
Nike Golf PGA Team
