The home run dairy farmer recognized for excellence Shuffleboard
Shaun Gregory
Huron Expositor
Derek is most recently
known around town for his
generous offer of 100 litres of
milk to the local food banks
for each Blue Jays home run
hit in the playoffs of 2015.
This year his volunteering
and annual donations were
noticed.
Last April in Guelph Ont.,
Derek Van Dieten, from Sea -
forth accepted the Ontario
Dairy Youth Award, as well
as three other farmers that
are spread out across the
province.
The award is given to
those who have verified
leadership, and established
a dynamic role in their com-
munities. First launched in
1980, the award focuses on
dairy farmers between the
ages of 25-35.
Nominated by the Huron
County Holstein Club and
followed by an interview
process, from all the positive
endeavors Van Dieten was
involved in, he was the most
suitable nominee.
It's a habitual occurrence
to see the 30 -year-old dairy
farmer giving chocolate
milks at parades and thou-
sands upon thousands of
milk donations to local char-
ity organizations annually.
Last year after his Twitter
Tweet went viral that he
would be providing a 100
litres of milk for each home
run hit by Canada's only
team in Major League Base-
ball, the feedback skyrock-
eted. Currently the Jays are
75-57, making them the fifth
best team in the entire
league.
Several other dairy farm-
ers joined the trend and
according to Van Dieten he
Derek Van Dieten, from Seaforth
donated about 1700 litres of
milk in the cause. And all
together there was roughly
6,000 litres donated. He
said if all goes as planned
for the Blue Jays, this year
could be looking the same
as 2015.
"The way they are running
now looks like we might get
a chance to run it again,"
stated Van Dieten August 30.
"It would be fun to do this
year, we donate milk every
year, why not have a bit of
fun with it."
One of the pluses of win-
ning the award is that Van
Dieten and the other three
winners will receive an all
expenses paid trip to the
World Dairy Expo in Madi-
son, Wisconsin in October.
