Downtown Clinton fire leads to arson investigation

An investigation by the
Huron County OPP Crime
Unit and the Office of the
Ontario Fire Marshal into
the cause of a recent fire in
downtown Clinton has
determined the cause of at
least one of the three blazes
to be arson. They came to
believe this after finding an
accelerant 011 the scene.
This came after the Cen-
tral Huron Fire Department
fought three fires in down-
town Clinton on August 28,
29 and 30.
The fire took place in a
two-story building just north
of Made in Huron on Albert
Street.
Responders first received
a call early Sunday morning
on August 28 around 1:30
a.m. after two passersby saw
flames and smoke coming
from the buildings. Central
Huron firefighters with help
from the Seaforth Fire
Department fought the
flames until 8:30 a.m. that
morning.
They thought their work
was done, until they received
another call on the morning
of the 29th around 4:30 a.m.
They were then called again
on the 30th at 2 a.m.
"We didn't expect to be
back," commented Chief
Renner.
The building has sus-
tained significant interior
damage, and the
surrounding buildings have
been affected as well. How-
ever the exact extent of that
damage is not known at this
point as the investigation
continues.
There were five second -
level apartments affected;
two or three of those were
occupied at the time of the
fire.

Apology for story in last week's paper
To our valued readers,
In last week's paper, there
was a story about C.H.S.S. stu-
dents who had invented an
action camera similar to a
GoPro called VOLT X.
The day after that paper
came out, the Clinton News
Record received a call from
George McEwan, the principal
of Central Huron Secondary
School, who said that the article
was a fraudulent story. The peo-
ple in the article did not attend
C.H.S.S.
I, (Justine), was extremely
upset to receive this call, as I
had no doubts in my mind until
that point about the legitimacy
of the story. In fact, I was really
excited about the story. I talked
on the phone and Skyped with
"Kevin; and nothing about the
way he interacted with me or
any of the information he sent
me signaled any red flags. I
looked up the camera online
and saw it featured on another
media outlet as well. It certainly
was an elaborate scheme.
After the call from George, I
looked up the camera again
and found that a story had just
been posted about how these
individuals were scamming
newspapers all over the world,
including in Australia and the
States, in attempt to get money.
Most of all, I feel very upset
that people in our community
might have donated money to
this fake cause. For that, I am
deeply sorry. I have taken down
the article, reported the fraud
and contacted indiegogo.com
where VOLT X is fundraising so
they can take down their page.
Once again, I am extremely
sorry for this error.
