Special to the News Record
In all seasons, Meals On
Wheels through ONECARE
in Clinton is on the road
delivering food to those in
need of a nutritious meal.
The program is geared
towards those who have diffi-
culty cooking for themselves
which is mostly individuals
that are recently out of hospi-
tal care, the elderly or those
who live on their own.
The food is distributed
over the noon hour from
Monday to Friday. Special
menus are available for
those with dietary
restrictions.
Meals on Wheels is a large
operation. However because
its work is behind the scenes,
not everyone knows about
what they do. Their reach is far
including Clinton, Exeter,
Goderich, Seaforth and Strat-
ford. On top of that, Meals On
Wheels is attempting to

Annually, the program
serves a whopping 31,000
meals.
"That can make a differ-
ence for someone that needs
it," says Shelley McPhee
Haist, Manager of Commu-
nications and Fundraising.
Haist also states that volun-
teers are needed and always
greatly appreciated.
The meals are delivered
door to door by volunteers,
each having a specific route
and homes to deliver to.
The meals are made within
commercial kitchens
located at ONECARE and
prepared by qualified staff,
and a total of roughly 400
volunteers help with the
delivery system.
Meals On Wheels is bene-
ficial in a number of ways.
First, it enables people to
stay living in their own
homes. For many people,
when they are unable to
cook for themselves, they
assume that moving into a
care facility is their only
option. Meals on Wheels
provides an alternative to
that.
It's also beneficial in pro-
viding a healthy meal. Studies
show that with a healthy diet

a person's physical health and
mental health are positively
impacted.
For someone who lives on
their own, it can also be
comforting for a volunteer to
come to their door every day
with a fresh meal along with
a smile.
For some people, they
depend on these meals every
day. There are fees for the
meals which range from $4
for a frozen entree to under
$8 for a full, hot meal. Finan-
cial subsidies are offered to
clients who are eligible fol-
