POLICE BRIEFS
OPP offering
online reporting
for crimes
(HURON COUNTY, Ont.) —
Huron County residents, do
you know there is another way
to report a minor crime? It's
called Citizen Self Reporting.
Huron County Ontario Provin-
cial Police (OPP) is reminding
the public about their online
reporting system as an alter-
native to having an officer
attend a scene for a minor
incident. You make the report,
at your convenience, with-
out the need to attend an
OPP Detachment or call the
OPP Provincial Communica-
tions Centre (PCC). Citizen
Self Reporting (CSR) rolled
out across the province in
the summer of 2014 how-
ever the use in Huron County
and throughout the region
has been very low to date.
The OPP's Citizen Self Reporting
system is an easy to use Inter-
net reporting tool that can be
accessed from a computer or
mobile device and sent directly
to the OPP anywhere, anytime.
Citizen Self Reporting provides
a convenient and user-friendly
alternative way to report crime
and at the same time it allows
the OPP to be more efficient with
our resources. Frontline officers
will be able to focus their efforts
on targeted enforcement initia-
tives and crime prevention strat-
egies within our communities.
Keep in mind, the use of this
new system is completely
optional. Police will still attend
a call for service if desired.
Here are the answers to some
questions you may have:
Break and
enter charges
(GODERICH Ont.)Two Goder-
ich residents are facing
criminal charges in rela-
tion to a break, enter & theft
that occurred in the Town of
Goderich this past August.
On August 19, 2016 Huron
County Ontario Provincial
Police (OPP) officers were con-
tacted by the owner of The
Bistro Restaurant located on
Courthouse Square in Goder-
ich. Police were advised some-
one forced entry into the
restaurant and once inside
the restaurant the thieves
stole alcohol, a cash regis-
ter and a quantity of cash.
A police investigation ensured
and with the assistance of
the Huron County OPP Prop-
erty Crimes Unit investiga-
tors were able to identify two
suspects responsible for the
crime. Officers located and
arrested both subjects in the
Town of Goderich on Tues-
day, September 27, 2016.

investigation, a 30 -year-
old from Goderich has been
charged with: Break, Enter
a Place — Commit an Indict-
able Offence and Breach of
Recognizance (2) counts.

OPP to Conduct
Fall Seatbelt
Campaign
(September 28 -
October 7, 2016)
(HURON COUNTY, Ont.) —The
deaths of 347 unbuckled vehicle
occupants in Ontario Provincial
Police (OPP)-investigated col-
lisions over the past five years
have the OPP calling on drivers
and passengers to help them
conduct a successful province -
wide fall seat belt campaign.
Between 2011 and 2015, the
OPP investigated more than
360,000 fatal and non-fatal
motor vehicle collisions. In
response to these incidents,
officers have had to rescue
thousands of victims amid the
wreckage. As first respond-
ers and collision subject mat-
ter experts, they know that a
road crash — even a low speed
crash- is an uncompromis-
ing ordeal for vehicle occu-
pants. They also know that
not wearing a seat belt is a
game changer when it comes
to your chances of surviv-
ing a crash and reducing the
severity of your injuries.
"Every year, our officers tend to
crash victims of all ages who
are not buckled in at the time
of the collision. More often than
not, they die as a result of being
ejected, partially ejected or from
the physical trauma they sus-
tained inside the vehicle. For-
tunately, our officers have also
witnessed numerous victims
survive their ordeal as a result
of being restrained in their seat.
Every life is worth the five sec-
onds it takes to buckle up."

mander, Traffic Safety and

OPP introduces
mobilization
officer
(PERTH COUNTY, Ont.) — Perth
County Ontario Provincial Police
(OPP) Inspector Rob SCOTT is
pleased to announce the intro-
duction of Provincial Consta-
ble Bill DEKONING as the Perth
County's first ever Community
Mobilization Officer (CMO).
The Perth County OPP sees
the need for a CMO as they go
forward and continue to inte-
grate their policing as part
of the Community Mobiliza-
tion & Engagement Model. This
model emphasizes all com-
munity members working with
police to make and keep neigh-
bourhoods safer, healthier,
more secure, and experiencing
less victimization and crime.
The model was launched in
2010 by the Ministry of Com-
munity Safety and Correc-
tional Services and the Ontario
Association of Chiefs of Police.
The OPP as an organization
began to apply the model in
Ontario communities in 2011.
In Perth County, this col-
laborative, safety -minded
approach has been inte-
grated in their business prac-
tice for a number of years,
and the appointment of a CMO
will forge an even greater
enhancement to the collabo-
rative policing approach.
"Under this model, initiatives
are led by the most appropri-
ate agency, which may actually
not be the police. Our CMO will
work with community partners
to support or address the under-
lying issues that manifest them-
selves in police calls for service.
For example, prolific calls to a
specific address as a result of
a mental health related issue.
Here a mental health strat-
egy, utilizing community agen-
cies will be explored. No one
person or agency can do it all.
We need to work hand in hand,
police and communities, to iden-
tify and address the root causes
of crime and social disorder.
The goal is to provide special-
ized assistance to those in need,
and ensure they are served by
the appropriate resources".
Inspector Rob SCOTT
The CMO's position, as an
integral part of the Commu-
nity Mobilization & Engage-
ment Model will work closely
with Perth County OPP's
Youth Resource Officers and
will also represent the Perth
County OPP at the "Huron
Perth Situation Table".
P/C Bill DEKONING, with over 20
years of multi -facetted policing
experience should be a good fit
for the task at hand. His com-
munity minded approach to
policing made him effective
as a Perth County OPP School
Resource Officer for many years.
Working in local schools, deal-
ing with youth, families and
numerous organizations will
help him in his new position.
