Women in Business in Huron East
Sit down for a chat with Betty Small, owner of Sally's Closet in Seaforth,
and you'll soon learn that family is important. Whether the family is
related by blood, or by shared experience in community, Betty loves
them! She started working in retail, then was a waitress in Lucknow for
a few years. Waitressing was fun for Betty, even though it's hard work,
simply because she is a people person.
While they were living in Lucknow, Betty's husband Warren got a job in
St. Marys. He drove back and forth through Seaforth, and he kept coming
home and telling Betty about this house that was for sale. They ended up
buying the house and moving to Seaforth in 2005. Betty got a job at Shell,
working the midnight shift. That was perfect, because she was home to
see her daughter off to school, and awake when the family got home.
However, her brother needed help with his business, so Betty started
working in New Hamburg, doing dispatching and customer service work
for a transportation company. She didn't like the winter traveling, though,
so when the job ended and a friend called her up to say, "Have you heard
that Sally's Closet is for sale?" she decided to become a business owner.
Karen Delvecchio, the former owner, trained Betty for only two weeks.
Betty got a loan from a family member and bought the business in 2009.
She had a lot to learn, but she knew she could do it! Her husband was
behind her, 100%, as was the rest of her family. Her daughter Danielle
joined her in the business, and they opened a second store in order to sell
their furniture. They moved everything to this location at 57 Main Street
in December, 2013.
Sally's Closet is a smorgasbord of various items for sale. They offer
quality used clothing which is brought in on consignment. Betty takes
consignment clothing by appointment only, and she sets the price. She
says that the clothing offered is the ultimate recycling, because it is
sold to someone who loves it and the consignor gets paid for it, too!
After three months, the clothing gets donated to charity.
In addition to clothing, there is plenty of furniture, wall art, books, toys
and household items for sale. It's fun to just pop in while waiting for a
prescription or an appointment downtown, and just browse the store,
looking for something special.
Another thing Sally's Closet is known for is their Country Chic paint. This
is a Canadian made, chalk based paint, perfect for furniture or projects
around the home. Betty became a distributor for Country Chic after
she won a painting class at a silent auction. She took her daughter to
the class, and they both loved it! Betty decided she wanted to carry a
Canadian made product, so she did her research and discovered Country
Chic had been launched just a few months prior. Betty has become one
of the top sellers in the company! She offers workshops in her store, or
in various locations in the area.
Betty and Warren have only been in town a few years, but they love
Seaforth! "It is such a welcoming town!" she declared. People in Seaforth
are always ready to help each other. Betty's had other retailers offer to
help lift a piece of furniture, for instance. Her husband and son-in-law are
ready and willing to make deliveries when she needs them.
Betty admitted that one of the disadvantages of being a small business
owner is the paperwork. She hates paperwork! It's one of those necessary
evils that just has to be done.
She also struggles with some health issues. Arthritis in her back makes
lifting furniture difficult, but that's where family and community come in.
She has an auto -immune condition that gives her some challenges, and
is prone to asthma, which makes it hard if a customer comes in wearing
a heavy perfume. These struggles are minor compared to the joy of
working in a small town and getting to know lots of people. Betty believes
strongly in supporting the local businesses, so she buys everything she
can from the stores in Seaforth, saying "Spend your money where your
home is!"
Sally's Closet is open Tuesday - Saturday at 10 am, closing at 6 on
Tuesday & Wednesday, at 5 on Thursday & Friday, and at 3 on Saturday.
