The communicator with the afterlife
Shaun Gregory
Huron Expositor
The best advice for a new-
comer who makes the bold
decision to give Kelly Elson's
psychic reading a whirl -
bring a tissue, because she
may just give you some
shocking data from the
afterlife.
The sold -out crowd Octo-
ber 27 at the Seaforth Agri-
plex welcomed 145 inquisi-
tive patrons who were
looking for any information
revolving around lost loved
ones, friends that had passed
or in rarer cases a pet on the
other side. Compared to last
year's event, according to the
Seaforth Agriculture Society,
this event had double the
attendance.
"That's not uncommon
right, it's the kind of thing
where people go in there and
they experience a little bit of
it," stated Elson about the
increased attention her
group sessions are receiving
of recent. "They tell other
people about it, so this cre-
ates a lot of curiosity:'
"There is a little bit of a
buzz going."
From first starting out by
volunteering readings 25
years ago, Elson said after
making this passion a full-
time gig in 2013, she never
fathomed that it could
become an everyday occu-
pation. Now living her
dream, the Goderich native
sees five scheduled
appointments a day from
Monday to Friday. Currently
Elson says she's booked into
February.
"For years I was very con-
fused because I thought I
needed to take a computer
course, nothing seemed to
draw my interest,"
explained Elson in a recent
interview.
"I could never have pro-
jected it to get (to) this
point,"
It's been one of her best
years to date with a personal
record of roughly 20 group
readings. However, it has not
always been a success for
her in the world of listening
and communicating with
spirits. At times in this
diverse line of work, she has
come across people who are
"condescending" or con-
sider Elson "evil."
"There is a lot of really
negative stereotypes
around psychics," said
Elson. "Even with hypno-
therapy I get the 'oh are you
going to make me cluck like
a chicken."
At a recent group session
to launch the show she got
right down to business with
those who are non -believers
or opposed to her occupa-
tion, "I asked (beforehand),
are there any cynics or
dumba****, and I'll come
and read to you first."
Not one person in Sea -
forth did anything of that
scale, it was all positive
feedback, the guests
watched in awe as Elson
put on a performance that
many said was "spot on"
when she communicated
with the dead. She
bounced around exact
names, told job descrip-
tions and personal traits
from some of the partici-
pant's family members
that had died.
Attempting to move table
to table, Elson waits for signs
or energy from the spirits.
She said it's similar to com-
municating with people who
are alive.
Referring to the deceased,
"they are very verbal; some
people are very visual (and)
expressive with their hands
or their facial features," she
said. "It's mostly images,
words and thoughts that just
come into my mind:'
People ask if her alleged
powers allow her to physi-
cally see the spirits.
"I sometimes see move-
ments, it gets confusing,
they show me a rose (as if)
they want to say I love you,
then I quickly realize their
name could be rose," she
said. "Or they could have
taken roses to the grave, I
(quickly comprehended) it
was important to be open
to that and not to be quick
to narrow it down to one
thing."
Elson mentioned that she
has already been booked to
return next year for an
appearance at the Seaforth
Agriplex.
