Walter Gretzky made a stop at The Gravy Boat Kitchen Store in Bayfield on May 14 to greet customers, sign some cards, and take some pictures. Gretzky had been to Huron County before, but said he's always impressed with the people he meets when he comes here. "They don't stop smiling," he said. Greztky didn't just stum- ble into Bayfield by acci- dent. Steve Rock, owner of The Gravy Boat, has been friends with Gretzky for a few years, and so asked him to come out last Saturday. They became friends through their work with Team Canada '72. They've toured around the country together, and built a friend- ship during that time. This friendship is surreal for Rock. He's a dedicated hockey fan, and remembers his Grade 2 teacher wheeling the TV into the classroom to watch the Summit Series. So, it was natural when Rock asked Gretzky to come to his new store to do a signing. The Gravy Boat kitchen store opened up in October 2015. Gretzky is a busy man and so it took about a month before he was able to make it to Bayfield. Rock said he was honoured to have Gretzky as an overnight guest in his home on the Friday night. "We talked about hockey (and life) until late at night, grabbed a few hours of sleep and enjoyed Saturday at my store," Rock said. The Gravy Boat stocks eve- rything a kitchen could use; accessories, gadgets and fun gifts line the shelves as unique options. For several years Rock was the owner of Kulpepper's in Goderich, after selling that business he worked with Team Canada '72 for a few years before deciding he wanted to get back into owning his own business while continuing his work with the team. Rock said he missed the interaction with the cus- tomers most of all, and so he came up with the idea of opening another kitchen store closer to home.
