The "Win This Space" con-
test is back again for 2016.
Put on by the municipality of
Huron East, this contest pro-
vides an amazing opportunity
for a young entrepreneur to
kick-start their business.
The winning prize
includes funding for a 12
month lease in Vanastra and
a prize package including a
year of business mentorship.
The total value for this prize
is currently estimated at
around $15,000.
The program was initiated by
Huron East's Economic Devel-
opment Officer Jan Hawley.
Hawley first about the idea at a
conference she was at. The con-
test had been run in other com-
munities, and it was a prize
winning initiative.

Skinny dipper
facing charges
(GODERICH, ON) — Huron
County OPP arrested a
28 -year-old male from Water-
loo this week after he drew
attention to himself taking
a plunge into Lake Huron in
the nude. At approximately
7:20 p.m. on May 9, 2016
Huron County Ontario Provin-
cial Police (OPP) officers were
dispatched to the St. Christo-
pher's Beach area in Goder-
ich after witnesses reported
a male had exited his vehicle,
stripped down into the nude
and went into the water for
a swim. After a short swim
the male exited the water and
walked around the beach area
before returning to his vehicle.
The male then left the area
in his vehicle, a Fiat sports
car. Minutes later officers
were able to locate the sus-
pect vehicle parked at a res-
taurant located on Bayfield
Road. The driver was seated
in the driver's seat now wear-
ing a shirt and his underwear.
The male was placed under
arrest for committing an inde-
cent act and while speaking
with the male the investigat-
ing officer noted the driver had
consumed some alcohol. A
roadside -screening test was
completed and the driver reg-
istered a fail. He was then
also placed under arrest for

"Starting a business can be
scary," said Hawley. "This
provides a safety net for the
first year."
Last year's winning busi-
ness was the Cotton Harvest
Quilt Shop which won a
space in Seaforth.
While last year's competi-
tion was for service and
retail businesses, this year's
will be for light industry and
manufacturing, which Haw-
ley noted is quite broad.
To enter the competition,
each applicant must submit
250 words about their idea
by June 17. The judges will
then make sure it fits zoning
requirements.
After that, each applicant
will receive three evening
training sessions, free of
cost. This will focus on mar-
keting, business plans and
understanding financials.

has since been released from
custody with a court appear-

Driver blows over
(EXETER, Ont.) —A 57 -year-
old driver from Goderich has
been charged with Care &
Control of a Motor Vehicle —
Over 80 Milligrams after he
was stopped by police last
weekend in Exeter. At approxi-
mately 12:25 a.m. on May 8,
2016 a Huron County Ontario
Provincial Police (OPP) officer
observed a Lexus parked on
Sanders Street West with the
headlights on and the engine
running. Police noticed the
driver appeared to be sleep-
ing in the driver's seat so
they proceeded to check on
the condition of the driver.
Upon getting the driver's
attention and speaking with
him the investigating officer
noted the driver had been
drinking alcohol. A roadside
screening test was completed
and the driver registered a
fail. He was placed under
arrest for Care & Control of a

After that, each applicant
may submit a business plan.
That is then narrowed to the
top five, and on one evening
in August, each of these five
individuals will present their
idea to a board of eight
judges, all of whom are busi-
ness people from the com-
munity. The winner will be
chosen on that night.
"Last year we got 28 appli-
cations," said Hawley. "24
took the training, and at the
end we had 12 business
plans. When we had to nar-
row to 5, it was tough. A lot of
them have gone on to open
businesses though."
