A group of St. Anne's Catholic Secondary students helped with some spring cleaning of the Van
Egmond House last week.
Two students from St. Anne's Catholic Secondary volunteered their time to help the Van Egmond
House by doing a few chores, including painting the picnic tables.
A good act noticed
Every spring St. Anne's
Catholic Secondary teacher
Michael Romijn, brings a
group of students to the Van
Egmond House for spring
cleaning. The gang of helpers
mainly focuses on the house
and property. Last week, he
and the following Grade 9-12
students, Trent Boivin, Nick
Cripps, Eric Bartz, Megan
Huard, Chuck Garrick, Troy
Leeming, Josiah Wozniak,
Matt Schwarz, and Luke Par-
sons came to the Van
Egmond House and spent
the day getting the place in
tiptop shape. Their chores
ranged from raking leaves,
cleaning gardens and paint-
ing the picnic tables. They
were cooked a lunch for
their good deeds, along with
a sit down for a history
lesson of the Van Egmond
House and the Van Egmond
family.
"It is nice to see kids
involved in their community
and we the care takers of this
historic house really appre-
ciate the school coming
every year helping are few
senior volunteers that we
have," stated the Van
Egmond House Foundation.

Central Huron S.S. stu-
dents gathered in the gym-
nasium with some students
from Goderich District Col-
legiate Institute in the morn-
ing of May 11 for a very spe-
cial occasion - to listen to
internationally renowned
journalist and historian
Gwynne Dyer.
Dyer spoke at the school 10
years ago, so since the Lon-
don, England based speaker
was in Ontario again, he asked
Central Huron if they'd like
him to come by.
Dyer, who was born in
Newfoundland, was origi-
nally trained as a historian
and has a Ph.D. in Military
and Middle Eastern History
from the University of Lon-
don. For over 20 years, he
has worked as a freelance
journalist, columnist, broad-
caster and lecturer on inter-
national affairs. He has a col-
umn that is published in
over 175 papers in around 45
countries, and he has pub-
lished several books.
History teacher David
Yates said he thought it
was joke when he got a
phone call by someone
claiming to be Gwynne
Dyer. Of course, it was
actually him.
"He called me and said
he had two speaking top-
ics that are based on cur-
rent books he's doing,"
said Yates. "One was on
terrorism and the other
was on the ecological cri-
sis. The students [in my
world issues class] voted
and chose to hear about
terrorism by a narrow
margin."

In his lecture, he talked
about the history of the
Middle East and what has
brought about terrorism
coming from that region.
He focused on how the
media hypes terrorism and
what the realistic impact of
ISIS is to North America
and the world, which in his
opinion is not drastic. His
other lecture is on the eco-
logical crisis that, he
believes, a much bigger
threat to the world today.
