Fishing Derby in Seaforth Shaun Gregory Huron Expositor It was roughly 6:45 Saturday morning and there was no need for shut eye as there were way too many trout to be caught at the annual Seaforth Lions Club Fishing Derby. Starting at the Bayfield River, the stream of water travelling under Highway 8, better known as Silver Creek had been filled with about 250, 10-12 inch long trout. Purchased from a fish farm, they were thrown in the water the Tuesday prior to the event in preparation for the change in climate. The Lions Club has been hosting the derby for the past 17 years, which previously was hosted by the Ontario Federation of Anglers & Hunters making the annual event almost 40 years -old. Back then it was primarily led by Larry Dolmage aka 'Mouse' at the time. To this day, the SLC said they are still grateful for his contributions throughout the years. They disclosed that Dolmage still continues to donate to the Fish Derby. Since the SLC inherited the event, the num- bers have been climbing said the chairperson for the Sea - forth Lions Annual Fishing Derby, Paul Stephen. This year 162 kids were registered compared to 145 from the pre- vious year. Each child was allowed to catch two fish. It was an excit- ing time for the young fishing enthusiasts. Bob Fisher said he's been participating in the event since 1978 and remembers when a natural fish made it to the derby. "One year we had a two and a half foot trout, it was a good one," he said. Stephen said the possibili- ties of that happening are slim because they've switched up the dates to fall two weeks after the end of trout season. Though the season is done, Stephen mentioned that even after the event is finished, he often witnesses fisherman quite interested in the chil- dren's derby. "You will still see people fish- ing all afternoon probably for the next four to five days," Ste- phen said. To go along with the festivities awards were given out at the end for the largest fish.
