May 13, 1887
• Mr. Wm. Ballantyne, the
town assessor, has completed
his labors and returned the roll
to the town clerk. From it we
learn the following particulars -
the real property of the town is
this year (1887) assessed at
$492,920; the personal property
at $60,800; and the income at
$19,230. The population is given
at 2,540.
• Geo. King of the first con-
cession of East Wawanosh, has
a brood mare that gave birth to
a colt that weighed 1551bs.
When it was one day old. It
measured three feet around the
heart.
• Dr. D.L. Ross, son of Mr. Finlay
Ross, of the ninth concession of
McKillop township, recently grad-
uated in medicine at McGill Col-
lege, Montreal, after a brilliant
career as a student. He is now in
Windsor to practise his
profession.
May 17,1912
• The corner stone of the new
Walton Presbyterian Church will
be formally laid Friday, May 24.
Rev. Dr. R.P. McKay, moderator of
the general assembly of the Pres-
byterian church in Canada has
been invited to lay the corner
stone.
• The closing blizzard for this
season occurred on Monday
last and for a time the weather
looked more like March than
May. The snow which fell to a
considerable depth soon
melted.
• Mr. Chas. P. Sills left on Mon-
day for the Crow's Nest Pass,
where he will be engaged in engi-
neering work for the CPR during
the summer.
• Mr. Thomas Stephens, of
the Queen's Hotel is having the
foundation prepared and the
material laid down for the
erection of a new concrete
replace the one burned down
last fall.
• Huron Lodge, No. 32,
Knights of Pythias, Seaforth,
had a regular fi eld night on
Wednesday evening of his week.
Th ey were visited by the degree
team of Rothbone lodge, St. Th
omas, to the number of about
50.
■ A Rebekah Assembly was
formed Friday evening last at the
Oddfellow's Hall which is a
ladies' branch of the Independ-
ent Order of Oddfellows. Miss
C.M. Edwards of Bridgeburg,
President of the Provincial
Rebekah Assembly instituted the
new lodge, which is to be known
as Edelweiss Lodge, No 117 in
Seaforth.
May 14, 1937
• Dr. Stephen A. Moore, Lon-
don, past president of the
Ontario Dental Association and
president- elect of the Canadian
Dental Association, spoke at a
largely attended meeting of the
Sea f o rth Lions Club on
Monday.
• Seaforth council approved
new street lights for Main
Street at its meeting Monday
evening and instructed the
Public Utility Commission to
purchase and install the neces-
sary standards.
• Member of the Edelweiss
Rebekah Lodge observed the 25th
anniversary of the formation of
the Seaforth Lodge on Monday
evening.
May 17,1962
• A reduction in the Seaforth
tax rate to 85.2 mills for public
school supporters was confirmed
Monday night when council gave
final reading to the 1962 tax
bylaw.
• A most enjoyable evening
was held on Th ursday in the
Community Centre, when Edel-
weiss Rebekah Lodge entertained
over 200 member of the
Rebekahs lodge in Huron district
to mark the occasion of its 50
anniversary.
• Members of the Hensall bowl-
ing team, the Hi- Lites, captained
by Mrs. E.R. Davis won third prize
at the bowling playoff s at Zurich
Bowling Lanes.
• A Grey Township man has
left for Pictou Island, Nova Sco-
tia, to take up a Presbyterian
Church Mission Post. James
Perrie, B.A. son of Mr. Mrs. W.J.
Perris left last week for his new
post.
• The first meeting of the Sea -
forth 4-H Field Crop Club was
held in the Seaforth District High
School on Wednesday. Officers
elected were: President, Donald
McKercher: vicep re s i dent, Jim
Pap p 1 e ; secretary, George
Townsend: press reporter, Gordon
Pryce.
■ Starting June 1 motorists in
Ontario will take their cue from
the fl ashing lights when follow-
ing or approaching school
buses.

• The Huron County Board of
Health has yet to make any rec-
ommendations regarding a
brief by health unit employees
outlining some of their con-
cerns which were presented to
the board at its Apr it 15
meeting.
• Two well-known area resi-
dents have been honored by
the government for their vol-
unteer work. Th irty-eight indi-
viduals, including Gladys Van
Egmond of Clinton and Isa-
belle Campbell of Huronview
and formerly of Seaforth
received 1987 Volunteer Ser-
vice Awards at the Public
Library in Owen Sound on May
6. Th e awards were presented
on behalf of the Ministry Citi-
zenship and Culture.
