Hillsview Farms opens up for the fourth time
Shaun Gregory
Huron Expositor
After a gentle winter and few
setbacks, the Hillsview Farms
produce stand is up and run-
ning on Main Street in
Seaforth.
It wasn't your typical spring-
like weather last Thursday for
their opening day, but none of
that stopped the locals from
making an appearance for a few
fruit and vegetable purchases.
In Lucknow, their farm sits on
about 25 -acres of land with an
array of produce growing
throughout the year. Currently
they are located in numerous
locations including Seaforth,
Goderich, Clinton and a couple
of farmers' markets in Toronto
as well. The family of growers
has come a long way since
jumping in the produce busi-
ness some 16 years ago, when
they bought a property with a
few apple and pear trees. It was
not until 2005 when things
really changed in the growing
business -they decided to go
chemical -free. The owners,
Mike and Wanda Hill did this as
a test and the experiment was a
huge success. Mike was work-
ing
orking at a hog farm full-time. The
business was flourishing so
much he quit and devoted his
time to the family enterprise.
Now they have specific farmers
that grow organics that they are
not able to grow on their own
farm. In 2010 they expanded
once again, this time they chose
to build an additional on-site
barn to be able to put their extra
produce to better use. This is
meant for the production of
jams, pickles, salsa, spaghetti
and chili sauces and organic
cookies, along with organic
Plan. Prepare. Be Aware
Emergency Preparedness
Week (EP Week) is an annual
event that takes place each
year during the first full week
of May. This national event is
coordinated by Public Safety
Canada, in close collaboration
with the provinces and territo-
ries and local partners.
This year, the theme is Plan.
Prepare. Be Aware. This
year's event will help Canadi-
ans take action to protect
themselves and their families
during emergencies.
The Joint Public Education
Sub -Committee of the Huron
County Emergency Manage-
ment Committee has partnered
with the Avon Maitland District
School Board (AMDSB)
and the Huron Perth Catholic
District School Board
(HPCDSB) to deliver an Emer-
gency Preparedness Program
to students. Both school boards
will be hosting events during
the Emergency Preparedness
Week in their school's
gymnasium.
The program will teach stu-
dents how first responders and
communities come together to
baking, organic granola, and
gluten free products.
April 28, marked their fourth
season of opening up shop in
Seaforth. The place that some
call the farmers' market, but
Brittany De Lange from Hills -
view Farms, refers to as a "fruit
stand" had a steady flow of
customers throughout the day.
It was an odd year for Hills -
view, but the shelves were still
filled. There were pros and
cons to the unusual winter in
Seaforth.
"You can harvest kale and
carrots in the winter, but this
help people during a disaster.
Every municipality has an
emergency response plan, and
the students will learn how our
municipalities respond if there
is an emergency situation.
Avon Maitland District
School Board has chosen
Goderich District Collegiate
Institute as their host school for
the May 3 event from 3:30 - 8
PM, and includes approxi-
mately 20 -25 students.
The Huron Perth Catholic
District School Board has
chosen St. Anne's as their
school for the May 4th event
from 3:30 - 8 PM.
The following community
partners (response agencies)
will attend both events:
