The Huron Co-operatives Rural Broadband Improve- ment Project was developed between county staff and local telecommunications service providers to go the "last mile" in expanding broadband Internet. T h e H u r on Telecommunications Co- operative Ltd., Tuckersmith Communications Co-opera- tive Ltd. and Hay Communi- cations Co-operative Ltd. project will cost an esti- mated $1.8 -million. The project proposes to connect 929 homes, several small businesses and a school with faster download speeds. The Huron Co-oper- atives are looking to the pro- vincial and federal govern- ments to fund 50 per cent of the total project cost with the rest coming from the Huron Co-operatives. Warden Paul Gowing said it was the last mile that is important in discussions with the Southwestern Inte- grated Fibre Technology (SWIFT), an initiative of the Western Warden's Caucus. The Huron Co-operatives' project answers a lot of those questions, he added. This endorsement would be only step one but it has the potential to expand beyond that, Gowing said.
