Exeter Seaforth U19AA was ranked 8th going into the event and finished just shy of the semi-finals finishing 5th in the Province. The players showed and amazing amount of creativity in the three days of play, knowing they had no chance of advancing they came out on fire and picked up two wins and played 'the spoiler' for one of the teams. Day l - Game 1, March 10 The locals played Waterloo (the Ontario Champs) and lost 8-2 in a usual physical game. Maddie Cormier scored the first goal of the game, a signa- ture "spin around shot", 11 minutes into the first half, on a Hailey Wietersen pass, to excite the bench and the fans. Waterloo scored two before the end of the half up by two. Waterloo had added another before Cormier and Wietersen put a repeat on the first goal, to come within two, but the big strong Waterloo players shut Exeter Seaforth down and sealed the win. Day 1 - Game 2 Although the locals were licking their wounds from the morning's loss, they came out firing bullets that were hitting the net. Gloucester started the scoring but Avery Wedow added the equalizer on a Rachelle Keys and Alyssa Van- derkuylen pass. Exeter Sea - forth U19 started on a scoring roll Amanda Hodgert started with a looper with Keys assist- ing, Cormier got two goals on Amanda Verbeke and Chris- tine Leach passes. Hockey tournament celebrates 50th year Shaun Gregory Huron Expositor The young bucks from Seaforth and the region competed in the Seaforth Knights of Columbus Annual Hockey Tournament, a contest that's been relevant since 1966 when Vincent Lane founded the gathering, making this year's event the 50th anniversary. "It originally started back in the 60s, basically for kids who don't play hockey, since then it's evolved," stated Rob Vanden Hengel, the tourna- ment convenor for the last seven years. "Basically any kid that goes to school (can) sign up to play." Every year the Knights of Columbus take care of the costs for each player. To promote the tourna- ment a memo is sent out to most of the Catholic schools in the area and by January, Vanden Hen - gel said parents are asking about the details of the two-day competition. With a total of 16 teams, the event, held from March 12-13 had both boys and girls mixed up in teams. The seniors took the ice from Grade 6-8.
