One bad day takes U19AA Explosion out of Provincial Ringette semi-finals
The Exeter Seaforth Explo-
sion U19AA Provincial
Ringette team participated at
the Ontario Provincial AA
Ringette Championships in
Waterloo and represented
their Association well winning
three of six games in Round
Robin play. Exeter Seaforth
U19AA was ranked 8th going
into the event and finished just
shy of the semi-finals finishing
5th in the Province. The players
showed and amazing amount
of creativity in the three days of
play, knowing they had no
chance of advancing they
came out on fire and picked up
two wins and played 'the
spoiler' for one of the teams.
Day l - Game 1, March 10
The locals played Waterloo
(the Ontario Champs) and lost
8-2 in a usual physical game.
Maddie Cormier scored the
first goal of the game, a signa-
ture "spin around shot", 11
minutes into the first half, on a
Hailey Wietersen pass, to
excite the bench and the fans.
Waterloo scored two before the
end of the half up by two.
Waterloo had added another
before Cormier and Wietersen
put a repeat on the first goal, to
come within two, but the big
strong Waterloo players shut
Exeter Seaforth down and
sealed the win.
Day 1 - Game 2
Although the locals were
licking their wounds from the
morning's loss, they came out
firing bullets that were hitting
the net. Gloucester started the
scoring but Avery Wedow
added the equalizer on a
Rachelle Keys and Alyssa Van-
derkuylen pass. Exeter Sea -
forth U19 started on a scoring
roll Amanda Hodgert started
with a looper with Keys assist-
ing, Cormier got two goals on
Amanda Verbeke and Chris-
tine Leach passes. In the half's
last minute Hodgert managed
another on a great feed from
Wedow and Jessica Quinn.
Explosion's were 5-2 after a
half but weren't done. Hodgert
put her third in on a Keys,
Natalie Reay pass. Reagan Van-
dewalle netted a great rebound
off Verbeke and Cormier.
Cormier finished the locals
scoring on two attempts giving
her a hat trick plus one, assist-
ing were Verbeke, Vandewalle
and Leach. Gloucester added
two in the last minute to round
the score at 9-4.
Day2-Game3
Central Whitby jumped into
a quick 2-0 lead before the
locals got into the game. Hodg-
ert cashed in a great Wedow-
Keys pass, Cormier followed
suit on a nicely placed Verbeke
pass. Wietersen passed to
Hodgert who found Wedow in
front of the net to even out the
first half scoring at three. Fast
end-to-end play went on
between penalty calls. Central
Whitby got the bounces and
added two goals and but
Cormier hit the mark from
Keys at the buzzer for 4-5
Day2-Game4
With two losses Exeter Sea -
forth was in a must win situa-
tion against City of Ottawa. To
start the teams exchanged
goals. Cormier netted another
spin around goal on a Vande-
walle pass, but Ottawa added
two while on a power play. As
Exeter Seaforth mounted there
attack Hodgert saw Wedow
down low and rifled the ring
from the blue line and it went
into the net to come within
one. Vanderkuylen blasted the
ring into the net to tie the game
on a Verbeke,Vandewalle pass.
Penalties hurt Exeter Seaforth's
scoring attack, and Ottawa
were up 7-3 but Verbeke man-
aged one with Cormier and
Quinn helping while Cormier
and Wedow got the final goal
for a 7-5 loss Saturday March
12.
Day 3- Game 5
Exeter Seaforth's Hodgert
started the Explosion attack
with Wedow and Keys assist-
ing. Third placed Nepean tied
the score with their lone goal of
the game. The locals were
relentless and with speed and
great goaltending from Kendra
Nesbitt they controlled the
play. Wedow found mesh on a
Keys pass. Cormier added teo
more with Hodgert and Ver-
beke assisting. The final goal
came from Leach with

Day 3- Game 6
Richmond Hill was in need
of a tie or a win to advance to
the finals and Exeter Seaforth
had had trouble in the past
with them, but with no pres-
sure on the locals and the last
game of their season, the girls
played with strength and
speed. At 12:12 Hodgert scored
the first goal of the game as she
was being hooked down. The
second half continued fast and
furious. Richmond Hill took
advantage of a power play and
scored to tie the game. The
locals played as if they were in
the final digging deep, Cormier
finished her provincial week-
end with what proved to be the
winning goal in an end to end
barn burner 2-1 game.
The Exeter Seaforth Explo-
sion U19AA Provincial
Ringette team finishes the sea-
son 5th in Ontario up from
their 8th ranking and third in
Western Ontario Ringette
League play with a 17 win -20
losses -7 tie record.
Hockey tournament celebrates 50th year

The young bucks from Seaforth and the region
competed in the Seaforth Knights of Columbus
Annual Hockey Tournament, a contest that's been
relevant since 1966 when Vincent Lane founded
the gathering, making this year's event the 50th
anniversary.
"It originally started back in the 60s, basically for
kids who don't play hockey, since then it's
evolved," stated Rob Vanden Hengel, the tourna-
ment convenor for the last seven years. "Basically
any kid that goes to school (can) sign up to play."
Every year the Knights of Columbus take care of
the costs for each player. To promote the tourna-
ment a memo is sent out to most of the Catholic
schools in the area and by January, Vanden Hen -
gel said parents are asking about the details of the
two-day competition. With a total of 16 teams, the
event, held from March 12-13 had both boys and
girls mixed up in teams. The seniors took the ice
from Grade 6-8.
"Family members are getting the chance to play
together, brothers and sisters that might not be
able to play hockey throughout the year, so they
come to this tournament."
