Away with words

county -wide poem competition

Marissa Price, from Seaforth has a
way with words. The 11-year-old's
poem (see factbox) won first place
for all of Huron County.
Up against several others her age,
Seaforth Legion judges believed
Price's Remembrance Day poem had
what it takes to win the county -wide
competition. She admitted to not pen-
ning many poems in the past, but this
specific piece of writing surpassed her
standards.
"I just wrote what I felt was best,"
she said March 24 in the Expositor
office.
Her mother Krista Price, said after
the piece was finished it started circu-
lating around St. James Catholic
School from instructor to instructor.
"She did well, she said my teachers
told me I would win," stated Krista,
referring to what her daughter had
told her..
"The one teacher said to the other
one, you need (to read) this because
it's really good."

The Art of the Poppy
I walk home from school
I play a sport for my country
But then I remember what they did for us...
I go to school next day
And I read a story about Remembrance Day
I'm shocked about what I read about the soldiers
They risked their lives just to save us...
I go to a grave where poppies are
I pray here in front of their graves
I get up and grab my sketchbook
And I draw a poppy
I get home and I put the drawing on my wall
Then I write a story about the war
And put it next to the drawing
I then smile
"I'm so proud to be Canadian."

Possible bear tracks in Goderich
Laura Broadley
Postmedia Network
Goderich has had a visitor over the
last few days.
Someone alerted Bob Trick, animal
control officer with the Town of Goder-
ich to possible bear tracks were founded
near Balvina Drive, behind Goderich
Place on Wednesday morning. He
couldn't say for certain whether they
belonged to a bear but that they were
definitely not dog or coyote tracks.
"I'm assuming it's a bear. A smaller -
type bear, maybe a yearling, Trick said.
No sightings of the bear have been
reported yet but a resident phoned in
after finding the tracks. The tracks
appear to be fresh and Trick estimates
they were made within the last 24 hours.
While bears in Goderich are rare,
they're not unheard of, Trick said.
Two years ago a mother bear and her
cub decided to come to town but there
was nothing reported last year.
"You must remember, they're very
hungry this time of year. They've come
out of hibernation so they're really look-
ing for something to eat," Trick said.
Dog and cat food, as well as garbage,
left outside can draw bears to your yard.
Trick also suggests people hold back on
putting bird feeders out.
If you do see a bear, don't approach
it and contact the OPP right away,
Trick said.
