Saying goodbye wasn't
easy for Mel Nolan.
The veteran St. Michael
forward spent four seasons
with the Warriors girls
hockey team. She won three
provincial medals, includ-
ing a second straight gold
medal after Thursday's 6-3
victory over Sudbury's Col-
lege Notre -Dame at the
Rotary Complex in
Stratford.
Nolan will put hockey
aside next year and focus on
her post -secondary
education.
"It was sad to see it come
to an end," she said. "I had
the best four years of my life
here thanks to Flan (head
coach Mark Flanagan),
thanks to all these girls.
Wouldn't have wanted it to
happen any other way."
Nolan spoke through
tears as she talked about
celebrating with her team-
mates. This year's champi-
onship was her favourite
moment in a four-year high
school career filled with
many of them.
"We worked so hard to get
here and we didn't just
come in as the hosts," she
said. "We came in like we
deserved to be here and I'm
just really proud of all these
girls and how hard we all
worked together."
The Warriors went 6-0 at
OFSAA and have now won
12 consecutive games at the
provincial tournament. St.
Mike's, which finished sec-
ond as a 'AAA' school in
2014, has won four OFSAA
medals with Flanagan
behind the bench.
"The first one is always
fantastic. You can't take that
away," he said. "But this one
came with more pressure.
Being in Stratford, the girls
friends are all here, their
classmates, their parents,
everybody is at home. We
talked the last two years
about hosting OFSAA and
working our way here."
St. Mike's advanced to the
final with a 2-1 win over
Holy Trinity. Madison
Davey and Faith Flanagan
scored for the Warriors.
Notre -Dame was coming
off a 7-1 win over St. Theresa
and started the final with
two goals in two shifts.
"We needed to wake up
after that for sure," Nolan
said. "We said on the bench
we needed to calm down.
Take two seconds and calm
down, get our heads back in
it and start at a 0-0 game
again. We came back and it
showed on the scoreboard."
Nolan had two goals in
her final game, including
the winner in the first
period. Clodagh Weber also
scored twice, while Lexi
Templeman and Faith Fla-
nagan had single markers.
Templeman is three -for -
three in the medal depart-
ment. The 16 -year-old will
try for a fourth next season
before heading to Robert
Morris University on a
hockey scholarship.
"Next year is going to be a
big year," she said. "We have
a lot of girls that are 111
Grade 11 this year, so we'll
be losing a lot next year.
Next year we're really hop-
ing to get another kick at the
cat."
In addition to Nolan,
departing Warriors include
Neve Van Pelt, Weber, Dan-
ielle Schoonderwoerd, Jor-
dan Templeman and Emily
Drake. Nolan was asked
what made the three -time
OFSAA medallists a special
group.
"We clicked," she said.
"I've had the best time of my
life with all these girls and
they're like family to me."
