A day to help
stop bullying,

Seaforth
Public raises
awareness
for bullying
Huron Expositor
Last week, pink was worn
by most of Seaforth Public
School's Peace Tree Com-
mittee. A small group of
mostly girls with a goal to
promote `happiness; this
project focuses on the hard-
ship most schools deal with
daily: bullying.
Bullying happens every-
where across the nation,
cities, suburbs and rural
towns. Also known as Pink
Shirt Day, it is a time to
identify the struggles some
children go through and to
broadcast the positive
trend, the hash tag #Pinklt-
Forward floods most of
social media.
"We want to promote
peace and kindness, (along)
with anti -bullying. It's a fre-
quent thing (bullying), it
happens a lot and we want to
do our part to try and stop it,"
said Tammy Regier, a Grade
3/4 teacher at Seaforth Pub-
lic School.
Regier said the PTC is a
small group of mature stu-
dents who usually meet up
once a week to brainstorm
future events, a group she
refers to as the "die-hards."
"I think it's making peo-
ple aware that we are aware
also. Bullying does exist
and we want to try to do
something about it and the
girls here are trying to do
their part as well,"
explained Regier.
According to the Government of Canada:
• Currently Canada has the ninth highest rate of bullying in the 13 -years -old category on a scale
of 35 countries
• Approximately one in three adolescent students in Canada have reported being bullied recently
• Amongst adult Canadians, 38 per cent of males and 30 per cent of females reported having
experienced occasional or frequent bullying during their school years
• Any participation in bullying increases risk of suicidal ideas in youth
• The rate of discrimination experienced among students who identify as lesbian, gay,
bisexual, trans -identified, two -spirited, queer or questioning (LGBTQ) is three times higher than
heterosexual youth
• Girls have a higher probability to be bullied on the Internet than boys
• The most common form of cyber -bullying involved receiving threatening or aggressive e-mails
or instant messages, reported by 73 per cent of victims
