Having a career in farming
and education and being raised
in rural Ontario, Arnold Mathers
has a lot of stories.
In his new book Home
made and hand me downs,
Mathers gives people a taste of a
good old fashioned read.
Mather's mom was a teacher,
his dad a farmer. He remembers
well life on the farm and has
close to fifty stories about his
family, rural education and out-
side sports and everything in
between. After nearly 40 years in
the education field; a teacher,
principal and superinten-
dent with the Avon Maitland
school board, he retired in 1994.
Then he went back to farming
on a part time basis.
Mathers told the Lakeshore
Advance his first book was a fam-
ily history. He was born in 1928
and was raised in Morris Turn -
berry near Wingham. He moved
to Exeter in 1964 and began
writing about his family for a
couple decades. He has no
shortage of stories and he said he
began reading the stories to his
grandchildren. It was actually his
mom who convinced him
to compile the stories into books.
"It takes a village to create a
book," he says in his intro. And
this story teller examines all
aspects of rural life, with an
added bit of humour. Getting lost
in this book is an easy feat. From
story to story, you relive Mather's
life and can relate to your own.
"My very first suit (not my birth-
day suit) was hand made by my
mother well over 65 years ago," he
writes in his first story. He writes
about his dad farming in the Thir-
ties and flies in the farmhouse.
While writing the book,
Mathers was fortunate to have
New York artist Randy Jones, who
just happened to be from Exeter,
do some of his illustrations. Jones
got work at the New York Times
Magazine. His work appeared in
many other major publications,
including Wall Street Journal,
Tips for a HAPPY
Retirement
Newsweek, Time , Business Week,
U.S. News and World Report,
United Features, Inx.
Syndicate,Washington Post, Cam-
bridge University Press, Condi-
Nast Publications, MTV, Playboy,
National Lampoon, etc.)
"So, having illustrations from
Randy Jones in my book is an
incredible bonus," says
Mathers. Over the years,
Mathers stories have been fea-
tured in the Rural Voice, an agri-
cultural magazine. The book
contains some stories that have
not been published.
Home made and hand me
downs is a must read. These sto-
ries of rural life come from
another age in a clever, per-
sonal, interesting scribe, offer-
ing that getaway you expect
from a good book.
The books are available at
Finchers in Goderich, Blyth
Theater, Belgrave Coop, The Gift
Chest in Wingham, Pete's Paper
Clip in Seaforth and the ReStore
in Exeter and the Lakeshore
Advance in Grand Bend.
