The Huron East Fire Dept annual report
is available publicly; it comes with a pre-
dicted forecast of information, while some
parts of the prepared document numbers -
wise appeared to be a "little higher than
usual."
Out of all three of the fire detach-
ments in Huron East as a whole, 139
emergency calls were responded to in
2015. The Fire Chief of Huron East,
Marty Bedard broke down the data for
each call which included Brussels with
45 calls, 33 responses for Grey and Sea -
forth as usual had the lead with 61.
This occurrence has been repeated for
years.
"Seaforth covers a bigger area, it's
just the way it has always been. If they
cover more area, they are obviously
going to have more calls,' explained
Bedard on June 15.
This number is somewhat elevated
compared to the department's five-
year average, which sits at 115. Then
again, the previous five-year mean sat
at about 126 calls.
"It really does go in spurts. It's always
been right around 110-130," Bedard
said.
Along with Seaforth being the high-
est location for fire service attention,
the civic area also leads the municipal-
ity for false alarms, or what Bedard
refers to as false alarms from "human
cause." For example out of the 16
alleged false alarms from Seaforth,
"numerous" calls are from the two
nursing homes. Grey has none and
Brussels is responsible for one to date.
"They are caused by cooking. Smok-
ing from the cooking will set the alarms
off," Bedard said indicating the detec-
tors in the ceiling.
When the fire department does attend
to the situation, the confusion can cost
anywhere from $600-$1000.
"I've talked to them before, they have
to start updating their alarm equip-
ment," stated Bedard.
