Passing over the marriage torch
Huron East CAO predicts civil
marriages to increase
Shaun Gregory

A white wedding can cost
thousands upon thousands
of dollars, but for roughly
$350 you can get married at
Seaforth's 19th -century civic
structure known as Town
Hall.
It always has been an
obvious fact that most
municipalities offer their
services for couples to be
hitched civilly. Rather than a
wedding officiant/minister,
"technically," CAO's of
administrative districts have
the authority to lead two lov-
ers to holy matrimony. Sim-
ply sign some papers with
the end outcome of a two-
some becoming husband/
husband, wife/wife, or hus-
band and wife.
Whatever the case may be,
through a one -day course
provided by the Clerks and
Treasures Association, pretty
much any person with the
desire is capable of carrying
out such duties. Therefore
since Huron East's CAO,
Brad Knight has had some
local enquiring about the
position, at the last council
meeting on June 7, he
advised the public that he
will be "delegating" his
"authority" to those individ-
uals keen on taking on the
undertaking.
"There are some clerks in
some of the municipalities
that do the services, I just felt
I never had the time to do it
properly. We've had two or
three people interested in
doing it," Knight said in a
recent interview.
To the best of Knight's
knowledge, "there has been
one or two to use the council
chambers (to get married)."
"We don't get a lot of
them. I think as time goes on
there will be more people
that use it."
