Winthrop Ball Park receives a needed asset

To keep the Winthrop Ball
Park lively, a new jungle gym
has been added to the sports
field. Costs for the piece of
equipment were a little more
than anticipated and as a
result a fundraiser was held
to pay the difference.
From a farm credit
request, Sam Klaver was able
to apply and successfully
obtain $10,000 from the
Huron County Junior Farm-
ers. Seaforth local, Jason
Lamont kept the rhythm
steady as he strummed a live
performance for the crowd
playing songs by Oasis and
to energize the atmosphere
he ended with a beer tune.
The area folks merged for
an outside BBQ with home
cooked pork chops, baked
beans, potato salad alongside
some hot dogs and chips for
the children -roughly 400
hungry souls purchased a
ticket for a plate.
After the ribbon cutting for
the playground, Julie Camp-
bell, secretary for the Win-
throp Ball Park committee
spoke to the Expositor before
having a dish of her own. She
said it's events like this that
keep the community
"together," while also adding
since the park is somewhat
struggling at the moment
this equipment comes at a
perfect time.
"It's always a needed
asset, we are trying to get
more teams, we only have
seven," she said July 7 at the
Winthrop Ball Park.
Currently there are five
men's teams, followed by
two women's.
"We want to get back in
here, in order to do that we
need equipment and some
updates," ended Campbell.
To keep the night going the
Winthrop Road Runners went
head-to-head against Huron
County Junior Farmers in a
friendly baseball game.

Fisher wants angled parking to stay on Main Street
Shaun Gregory

In concurrence with the
new painted lines on Main
Street in Seaforth (Highway
12), some parking spots will
be removed and one Sea -
forth Coun. deems this as a
loss for businesses and
elderly locals.
To create a safe atmos-
phere for automobiles turn-
ing down Main Street, spe-
cifically transport trucks or
larger vehicles, furthering
the Ontario Traffic Manual
standards, which the Minis-
try of Transportation
reviews, angled parking is
being changed to parallel.
Currently the angled
parking lines are scratched
off, with citizens still using
them, a procedure that Pub-
lic Works manager, Barry
Mills took "advantage" of
when the county was
removing yellow lines on
Highway 8.
As it stands three addi-
tional parallel parking spots
have been added in front of
Paget's Place all the way to
the streetlights. As a result,
the town's only slanting
parking will be eliminated.
Mills informed the Huron
East council July 5, "the diag-
onal parking" interferes with
the new taper that was
installed farther back, for
turning vehicles.
Seaforth Ward representa-
tive, Bob Fisher requested
the angled lot stops remain
for the elderly inhabitants,
which use this destination
frequently.
"The age of population
and the clientele that shop,
parallel parking is park by
feel, angled parking has
been here as long as I've
been here for 38 years,"
Fisher pleaded to Mills in the
council chambers.

Seaforth Coun. Bob Fisher says angled parking should remain on
Main Street. "I think those spots are filled first before the parallel
and I would really, really like to see some angled parking left," he
said July 5.
"I think those spots are
filled first before the parallel
and I would really, really like
to see some angled parking
left."
Huron East Mayor, Bernie
MacLellan responded to
Fisher's claim by informing
him that this specific devel-
opment had to be done, a
project, which also was
demanded by council last
month.
"The county didn't want to
put the turning lanes in to
begin with, it was council
that made the request,"
stated MacLellan.

f
Steffler disagreed with Fish-
er's comments and said
there should be no angled
parking anywhere in Sea -
forth, due to the hazards fol-
lowing such designs.
"That is the only block of
all of Seaforth that has
angled parking, I can name
you different people who
will not park there because
they cannot back out safely,"
Steffler said. "If they are
parking by feel, somebody is
going to get hit really good
and they will feel it."
"At least with parallel
parking you can see in your
mirror to get out."
