Aimed at the 55 -plus market and bordered by Blanshard, Clayton, Nel- son and Frank Streets at the southwest end, the proposed townhouse development has been designed as a closed -in village that would contain 48 residential units and a common building, ideally built in the same style as Mitchell's old Market Square building. "The main entrance is going to be off of Clayton Street - I want that kind of like a driveway - and then (the first thing) you see right in front of you is the common building," Van Pelt described. "That common building, inter- estingly, I'm working with the architect and it's basi- cally being inspired by the historic Mitchell Market Square building. The old Mitchell Market Square had this really cool cupola right on top of the roof, and then just some of the style is going to be inspired by some of tex- ture and style of the Mitchell Market Square." Cathie Simpson Corporate Secretary/ President/ CEO Van Pelt, who grew up in Mitchell and now resides in Ancaster, but still has family in Mitchell, said he wants Upper Thames Vil- lage to be designed in a way that compliments some of the old architec- ture from Mitchell's past in order to bring a sense of community to the new development. "Right now you drive into that square in Mitch- ell's downtown (where the post office and cenotaph currently sit) and wish we would have kept those buildings," Van Pelt said. "Even as a little boy being raised in Mitchell, there was a gorgeous building there, the Mitchell Market Square. It's kind of a really neat way to say, 'This is where we come from, this is a great little town and it's a great story." The common building, Van Pelt added, would be between 1,800-2,000 sq. ft. and would serve as a sort of meeting place where residents can hold events and socialize in order to instill a sense of commu- nity. Van Pelt hopes to be able to install a patio with an outdoor fireplace, chessboard and shuffle- board court so residents can spend time outside with each other during the warmer months. To develop a sort of community within a com- munity, Van Pelt hopes to keep the proposed town- house development inward facing to facilitate more interaction between neighbours. "There would be much more conversation between neighbours, and ya, sure, people will want to be on their back decks, but we're trying to design every unit where every condo has a front porch to it. All of the lanes in the driveway we're trying to texture that so it's focused on walking traffic, not just vehicular traffic," Van Pelt said. With the conversation on the need for more sen- iors housing still ongoing between the municipality and the Ritz Lutheran Villa, Van Pelt believes his development will be a good way to meet the cur- rent demand for housing. On Jan. 27 at the Mitch- ell Golf and County Club from 7 to 9 p.m., Van Pelt and his architect will be hosting a public informa- tion session in order to garner feedback from the community he hopes his development will serve. "I want to know their opinion. I'm hoping that some of them will say, 'Hey, have you thought of this, or don't you think you should do this?" Van Pelt said. "Sure this is a kind of housing develop- ment, but I've also hung around municipal politics enough to know that we need to be sensitive to what the community's interests are." Also at the meeting, Van Pelt will give attendees a first look at the architec- tural concept drawings of the townhouses/condos. "There's a lot of stuff that still has to happen. We have to work with the municipality to get the site plan approved - there's a lot of details still that have to come into place, and that's going to take time," he continued. "It's excit- ing to see that this may be able to match some of the needs of the community. I think that's what makes this kind of unique." call 1-866-134-9425 r viit wwwmedicalert.ca MedicA1erI Lets You Live Life.
