Third year for Avon Maitland
District School Board
providing students with tablets
Huron Expositor
Avon Maitland District
School Board is substituting
pencils for tablets.
This year marks the third
year this specific initiative
is moving through the hall-
ways of the board's 40
schools in the region. The
small computer devices
provided by AMDSB are
free of charge to its stu-
dents and are built with
accessible features to
enhance their learning
abilities in the ever-chang-
ing world of technology.
Instead of having to travel
to computer labs, the
devices are compact and
ready to use at their desks
or can be carried to other
destinations.
"Students are able to collab-
orate more because they can
do it not just at school, but
they can do it at home (also),"
said AMDSB's director of edu-
cation, Ted Doherty. "We
wanted to put a device in the
hands of as many kids as we
could. We think that it breaks
down barriers."
All Grade 7 students
receive a tablet and are
allowed to use the machine
for personal use, and to
connect with friends, and
teachers before and after
school. As soon as the stu-
dents either leave the board
or graduate, they are asked
to return their device.
Last spring, Western Uni-
versity spent time conduct-
ing research about the pos-
itives and negatives of
using the tablets with
AMDSB students.
Doherty said the positive
feedback from the univer-
sity has been exceptional so
far.
"A lot of the staff is saying
students with special edu-
cation needs are able to be
regular contributors in the
classrooms more because
they have access to tech-
nology opposed from hav-
ing them to come out the
classroom with individual
attention," said Doherty.
"We don't know how long
the devices will last. We see
a lot of advantages. We're
committed to it. We are
hoping that we can con-
tinue to give our students
the most up-to-date tech-
nology as possible."
