Pick-up retrieved from Lake Huron, male body found

The body of an unidenti-
fied male was retrieved Sat-
urday afternoon from a
white pick-up truck that ear-
lier that morning had driven
off Kincardine Harbour's
north pier into Lake Huron.
The OPP Underwater Search
and Recovery Unit crane -lifted
the vehicle from the cold,
choppy waters of Lake Huron
shortly after 4 p.m.
South Bruce OPP, the Kin-
cardine Fire Department and
EMS were on the scene at the
end of Harbour Street shortly
after the vehicle went into the
water at 9 a.m. this morning.
According to an eyewitness
who asked for anonymity it
looked like an accident.
"[The truck] was going slow.
Looked almost like an acci-
dent as if it was a skating rink
out there, the person said.
Soon after arriving, the fire
department's delayed water
rescue team, which is trained
in ice and open water rescue,
entered the lake near the side
of the pier and were able to
locate the vehicle, which was
completely submerged in the
murky, turbulent water.
However, they were una-
ble to gain access to the
truck due to the depth of the
water, said Kincardine Fire
Chief Kent Padfield.
The Underwater Search
and Recovery Unit then
arrived at around 2:30 p.m,
and hoisted the truck from the
water an hour and a half later.
The cause of the incident is
still officially unknown and the
OPP is continuing to investigate
with assistance from the Office
of the Coroner and the OPP
Forensic Identification unit
who was also at the scene.
West Perth OPP school liaison officer retires after 30 years in Perth
Galen Simmons
Postmedia Network
It's not often these days
that a police officer stays
working in the same region
for their entire career, yet
after working for 30 years
(and 25 days...but who's
counting) with the Perth
County Ontario Provincial
Police, Jan Weeden can now
make that claim after having
retired from her posting in
West Perth Dec. 18.
"I was in Perth County the
whole time - it's very
uncommon to see that now,"
Weeden told the Advocate
after she officially retired on
Dec. 18.
Throughout her 30 -year
career with the Perth County
OPP, Weeden prided herself
in establishing and fostering
a good relationship between
youth and the OPP by
spending a lot of time in ele-
mentary schools throughout
the county. For the past year,
Weeden was named the
West Perth school liaison
officer and got to spend even
more time with staff and stu-
dents at West Perth schools.
"(I'll miss) the sense of
purpose. You go to work, you
know your affecting a lot of
people - in the last year I was
affecting a lot of kids when I
taught the Grade 6 OPP kids
program. So a lot of the kids
know me through that, or
just being at the high
school," she said.
"Being able to have that
influence where they recog-
nize you as a cop - and a lot
of the kids, you don't have
very many kids that don't
actually respect that. It's just
that positive thing, instead of
having somebody come to
their house to arrest some-
body, they just see me in a
positive light at the school -
so that's probably why I'll
stay back at the schools,
because they all know me,"
Weeden said, adding that
she plans on starting a men-
torship program and will
continue to volunteer at area
schools during her
retirement.
After 30 years, Weeden
says that although she loves
working with staff and stu-
dents during the school year,
she's grown tired of working
on holidays and weekends
and she's had enough of
driving to calls in the snow
during the winter.
"Last year in November
we had that big storm and I
headed out of town on a
call and had a car pull out
WWW.rriawielinks,C.a
right in front of me and
totalled the cruiser,"
Weeden recalled. "So I
wasn't really looking for-
ward to that again, so this
(weather) is perfect, I
didn't really get any snow
before I retired."
Now that she is retired,
Weeden plans on spending
more time with her
grandson.
Weeden will also be doing
a little travelling, as she is set
to visit Thailand and Barba-
dos in the new year.
