MPP Thompson calls on Liberals to scrap tire -tax program
Press -release
sent from MPP
Thompson
QUEEN'S PARK - Huron -
Bruce MPP and PC Envi-
ronment Critic Lisa Thomp-
son called on the Liberals
to scrap their tire -tax pro-
gram after news reports
revealed the government>s
agency, Ontario Tire Stew-
ardship, had been allegedly
wasting Ontarians> money
on lavish stays at luxury
hotels, expensive meals
and Liberal golf
tournaments.
"Ontarians are rightly out-
raged with the waste and
abuse of their money by the
Liberals> tire -tax agency,"
Thompson said. "There>s
only one way to stop this
abuse, and that>s to scrap
Ontario Tire Stewardship."
The Minister claimed in
Question Period that he had
already scrapped eco -taxes
with Bill 151, the Waste -Free
Ontario Act, even though
OTS continues to operate its
tire -tax program and his pro-
posed legislation hasn>t
been passed into law.
"The Minister should be
honest with Ontarians,"
Thompson said. "The truth is
Bill 151 continues each and
every one of the Liberals>
eco -tax programs. That
means Ontario Tire Steward-
ship can charge consumers
tire taxes for as long as the
Minister chooses:'
The Ontario PCs have long
championed a plan to
increase waste diversion by
eliminating eco -tax pro-
grams and making busi-
nesses responsible for meet-
ing recycling standards and
targets. The Liberals adopted
this approach in Bill 151, but
they have provided no firm
guarantees that they will
eliminate eco -taxes.
"To protect taxpayers and
to introduce the reforms
Ontario needs to increase
waste diversion, I am calling
on the government to estab-
lish a clear, legislated time-
line to eliminate all of its
eco -tax programs."
It was a cold day in Seaforth for the Beaver BRRR
This year marked the sec-
ond year for the Frontier
Area Beaver BRR at Seaforth
Public School where the
jamboree saw children from
all over the area. Roughly 65
kids from the ages of five -
years -old to eight -years -old
showed up fully clad in their
Scout Canada attire to take
pleasure in a full day's event
of dinosaur themed activi-
ties. Followed by an eventful
campfire song known as
`Herman the Worm:
All the children grouped around the campfire at the end of the day to sing `Herman the Worm.'
A lot of laughs at the Frontier Area Beaver BRRR on February 20.
Liam takes a rest from
the all -day affair.
