People waiting in line for food during the Welcome to Seaforth Benefit Breakfast at the Seaforth Agriplex. Huge crowd turnout to meet the Ethiopians Shaun Gregory Last Sunday the community had the chance to enjoy a hardy breakfast and meet one of the newest additions to Seaforth-the mother from Ethiopia and her four children. Several hundred people eagerly arrived at the Seaforth Agriplex for the Welcome to Sea - forth Benefit Breakfast, which began at 8 a.m. and carried on until noon. Piles of toast, an assorted selection of muffins, pancakes, 45 dozen eggs and 40 pounds of breakfast sausages kept the crowd coming back for seconds. The local children had a divided part of the hall sepa- rated off to play mini -stick hockey. The Ethiopians were all smiles with constant meet and greets from curious Huron East and area residents. At times throughout the gathering the Ethiopian children could be wit- nessed holding hands with their newfound friends. "It's a big help not even just financially. Big thing I see from this (event) is getting a sense of community. Without seeing people show up at events like this, when you're going down the street you don't know what sort of support is behind you," stated the founder of the Mel- ody -Powers Seaforth Refugee Sponsorship Group, Brian Mel- ady, who also mentioned he was 'completely impressed' with the dedication from the Seaforth Agricultural Society. "We see these people and these faces and these smiles, it (becomes) easier to make sure the family is safe in the community. There (are) so many people that took time out of their schedule to support them and say I'm here, I'm part of their community." Before the breakfast the Ethio- pians woke up in their home on Seaforth's main strip for the first time and Melady is confident they will be 'self efficient' in the next few weeks. Since the family arrived, Melady and his partner have been housing them and educating them about the Cana- dian culture so they are able to fend for themselves. "It's kind of like a kid that goes from crawling to walking, there is that between period when we are stumbling and need some hands to hold them up," con- cluded Melady. ATTENTION ADVERTISERS!
