Elephant Juice: Fresh, local, whole options at Goderich YMCA
Elephant Juice in Bayfield will
continue to operate from May to
October while the Goderich location
will remain open year round

Ryan Somers and Jen-
nifer Reaburn have had a
big year to say the least.
Not only did they open two
businesses but they wel-
comed their first child just
six months ago.
For most people that is a
recipe for stress but for
Somers and Reaburn it
seems to just be a natural
move. Their effortless
calming vibe radiates as
they serve customers, as
Somers casually sips a cof-
fee and as Reaburn calms
their baby daughter.
Just a few short weeks
ago Elephant Juice opened
at the YMCA in Goderich.
Instead of the typical arena
fried foods and hot dogs,
the juice bar offers nutri-
ent -packed smoothies and
juices. The restaurant uti-
lizes whole food ingredi-
ents - no processed pow-
ders. Ingredients are locally
sourced as much as possi-
ble; Kosuma Bars are from
London, Shopbike coffee is
a fairly traded coffee out of
Bayfield and they've part-
nered with local farmers for
produce. All the cups, lids
and straws are biodegrada-
ble to create as little waste
as possible.
Each recipe is a product
of Reaburn's love of food.
When combined with her
knowledge of nutrition and
risk-taking attitude when it
comes to recipes, Elephant
Juice's menu will give you
the boost you need after a
hard workout or even as a
healthy alternative for
meals. They've recently
introduced "Elephant
Bowls", a meal of brown
rice, chickpeas, quinoa
and vegetables; the recipe
shifts to incorporate new
vegetables or plant based
proteins.
They opened Elephant
Juice in Bayfield last May
for the summer season.
Reaburn said she always
knew she'd own a juice bar
as it goes with the healthy
lifestyle her and Somers
have, she taught yoga at
the YMCA for three years
before going on maternity
leave when their daughter,
River, was born.
All the hard work is
worth it for the couple
when they hear that two
high school students came
to Elephant Juice instead
of going to a fast-food res-
taurant for lunch.
Elephant Juice is a com-
plement to the mission of
the YMCA but Somers
insists it's not just for
members, anyone can
come get a healthy snack,
smoothie, juice or coffee
anytime.
They've garnered a mar-
ket and hidden demo-
graphic in the YMCA that
was looking for a nourish-
ing option. Professional
athletes don't eat burgers
and fries after a workout or
yoga class, Reaburn noted.
Somers said they're
grateful for the YMCA tak-
ing a risk on a new restau-
rant. He said he and Rea -
burn looked into opening
the second location some-
where else in Goderich but
decided the YMCA would
make the most sense - the
executives at the YMCA
agreed.
Elephant Juice's expan-
sion to Goderich was made
possible through a Com-
munity Supported Restau-
rant (CSR) model. CSR is
based on the same concept
as Community Shared
Agriculture, you pay ahead
of time for future product.
One of their supporters
paid $250 towards future
Elephant Juice product
because his children come
to the YMCA every
Wednesday, so it was
worth it to ensure his kids
had a healthy meal each
time. This supporter will
get $300 worth of product
