Doig's professional golf journey in the U.S.

A long way from home,
Robyn Doig is staying away
from the below freezing tem-
peratures of Seaforth's winter.
Instead she's in Orlando, Fla.,
enjoying the 18 degrees Fahr-
enheit weather, hustling day
and night to improve her
game of golf.
"The weather is a huge fac-
tor, Florida in general is a
great place to be in the winter
for golf," Doig said.
The 23 -year-old has com-
peted in two tournaments
this year for the National
Women's Golf Association.
Neither went as planned for
the long-time Huron East res-
ident. From January 19-21,
Doig competed in her first
contest of 2016 at the Victoria
Hills Golf Club, where she
shot a plus 21 and landed in
36th place on the leader -
board. Last week was the
Florida Women's Open,
which took place from Febru-
ary 2nd -4th, a tough battle for
Doig which resulted in her
not making the cut to con-
tinue on in the tournament.
As this form of competition is
new to her, Doig is treating it
as a "learning curve" and
plans to make some improve-
ments before the next event.
"I'm trying to better myself
in all areas, not just on the
golf course," stated Doig.
Currently Doig is working
one-on-one with a trainer,
exercising in the gym and
reading books daily to
enhance the mental aspect of
her game of golf.
"It's a full-time job, so you
have to make sure you cover
everything:'
The around the clock
employment for
the professional golfer is
beginning to become second
nature to her. As the lifestyle
gets more comfortable for
Doig she is looking at a more
challenging organization.
The NWGA is considered to
be a mini -tour so as soon as
she advances in the rank-
ings, the long-time Seaforth
golfer hopes to be able to
further her career in the
Symetra league of golf. The
Symetra organization is one
level lower than the LPGA
which is where Doig antici-
pates to be in the near future.
At the moment Doig is fresh
to the pro -golf scene and her
status is considered "lim-
ited; but with more wins that
title will change, Doig told
the Expositor on the phone
February 8.
"As far as the Symetra
events, it's kind of (a) waiting
game, but that's the way it is

highlights
Special to the Expositor
The Exeter-Seaforth Explo-
sion U19AA Provincial ringette
team travelled to the Rich-
mond Hill tournament this
past weekend and came out
with 50 per cent of their Pro-
vincial ranking points. The
highlight of the weekend was
Friday evening's 3-3 tie to the
undefeated Waterloo team,
which is the Western Region
Ringette League's top team.
Friday started with a 4-3 win
over London, this first of the
season meeting proved to be
an exciting fast and physical
match up right to the final
buzzer. London started the
scoring quickly and added a
second with 14:35 to play in
the first half. The Explosion
mounted their attack on a two -
player advantage, Amanda
Hodgert and Avery Wedow
worked the ring down to
the goalie's right post where
Amanda Verbeke backhanded
the ring into the net to get the
locals on the board. They con-
tinued to play strong and were
rewarded by another Verbeke
goal on a fast break to the net,
with Rachelle Keys and
Wedow assisting. Exeter-Sea-
forth's, Reagan Vandewalle
added one more before the
half with Wedow and Maddie

Cormier with the setup.
The second half was full of
fast skating en -to -end plays,
but midway thru, London cap-
italized on a power play to tie
the game. Back and forth play
challenged both goaltenders,
denying many attempts.
Hodgert successfully netted a
pass from Wedow and Alyssa
Vanderkuylen at 1:01 to take
the lead and eventuallywin the
game 5-4.
The Friday evening game
against Waterloo started 40
minutes late after a Zamboi
breakdown. Wedow slammed
the first shot of the game under
Waterloo's net minder on a
passing combo from Keys and
Hailey Wietersen. Waterloo
countered quickly catching the
Explosion twice in a minute to
take the lead 2-1. The local's
players and Kendra Nesbitt
turned on their focus and
matched the undefeated
Waterloo team for the remain-
der of the first and Cormier
gave a second effort while
short-handed and netted the
ring for the equalizer with 34
seconds in the first.
Five minutes into the sec-
ond half, Exeter-Seaforth
worked the ring around the net
on a two-man advantage,
Hodgert found Keys who
made no mistake and scored
the go-ahead goal with 15:31 to
go. Excited to be ahead of
Waterloo, the team played
strong to hold the lead and did
so well until 6:11 when a laser
shot found the top comer. With
great energy and goaltender
Nesbitt playing stellar, the
Explosion frustrated Waterloo
for everyone who is begin-
ning as a professional," Doig
said.
There are approximately 12
tournaments related to the
Symetra level for females
heading into 2016. Doig
expects to sign up for each
event and if enough partici-
pants enter, she will be able
to compete. However, if there
is an abundance of competi-
tors then it's possible she may
be bumped out of a spot.
"A lot of times players will
not want to play at all 12
events," stated Doig, who also
mentioned she's assured a
few spots will stay open.
Presently a few friends
from the University of Central
Florida, where she earned
her Bachelors Degree in
Applied Science, are housing
Doig. Her next tournament
will be held from February
23-25.
to the final buzzer, but we're
not able to score settling for a
well deserved 3-3 tie.
Saturday morning was a
frustrating match for the locals,
loosing 6-2 to Quebec's Lac St.
Louis. Exeter-Seaforth tied the
game at 5:52 when Keys found
Wietersen charging to the net.
After many close shots the
team found themselves frus-
trated and scrambled allowing
four unanswered goals and
ended the first down 5-1. Lac
St. Louis added one more, and
locals Hodgert were able to
add one on a great Cormier
pass.
Game 4 was a disappointing
loss to Mississauga 7-6. Keys
started the scoring on Hodgert
feed. Minutes later, Wedow
and Hodgert found Jessica
Quinn storming for the net to
take a two -goal lead. Missis-
sauga added two before, while
Wedow netted a Hodgert pass.
The half-time break score was
tied at three, the locals just
could get the edge, by match-
ing every goal.
Wedow added a unassisted
effort, combo Wedow, Hodgert
and Keys worked their magic
for one, and with the goal -
tender pulled for a four on
three attack Natalie Reay and
Keys passed to Hodgert who
netted the final goal with 16
seconds to go. Finishing the
Toumamentwith one win, one
tie and two losses. The girls
travel to London Sunday at
Carling Arena.
