The OPP supports International
Safer Internet Day
The OPP is support-
ing International Safer
Internet Day and cyber
safety awareness by
encouraging young
people and their fami-
lies to T.H.I.N.K b4 U
Send to ensure their
safety in the online
world.
International Safer
Internet Day is Febru-
ary 9th. It was created
to promote safer and
more responsible use of
technology, especially
among children and
young people around
the world. The theme
for Safer Internet Day
2016 is "Play your part
for a better internes':
One of the growing
concerns associated
with the Internet and
mobile devices include
cyber bullying. Cyber -
bullying happens when
people use computers,
cellphones or other
devices to embarrass,
humiliate, torment,
threaten or harass some-
one else. With the rapid
advances in technolo-
gies, cyber bullying is
happening to more and
more people every day.
Another increasing
concern is the issue of
self/peer exploitation.
Also known as "sex -
ting", this behaviour is
commonly defined as
youth creating, sending
or sharing sexual
images and/or videos
with peers via the
Internet, social media
sites and/or electronic
devices.
The OPP is encourag-
ing everyone to apply
the T.H.I.N.K test
before posting or send-
ing a cyber message or
photo. If it doesn't pass
the T.H.I.N.K test you
may be breaking the
law.
Ask yourself:
T. is it true?
H.
N.
K.
is it hurtful?
is it illegal?
is it necessary?
is it kind?
The OPP will be sup-
porting cyber safety
awareness by sharing
messages and
resources and encour-
aging followers to be
part of the conversation
on Twitter by using the
hash tags #SID2016,
#Up2Us and #OPPtips.

Romance
Scammers After
Your Money Not
Your Heart
(HURON COUNTY, ONT.) —
Huron County OPP is warn-
ing all citizens to beware of
online scammers engaged
in "Dating and Romance"
scams. "Dating and
Romance" scams have a pro-
found impact on victims, both
emotionally and financially.
Scammers have shown their
willingness to invest time into
forming false relationships
with unsuspecting victims in
order to gain their trust and
steal their money. According
to the Canadian Anti -Fraud
Centre (CAFC), in 2014 there
were 1,467 complaints from
Canada of romance fraud. Of
those complaints, 998 vic-
tims were identified and their
combined financial losses
exceeded $13.9 million, sec-
ond only to wire fraud.
Scammers can easily steal
photos online and use dat-
ing sites and social media
to lure victims into sending
money for various reasons.
Scammers may also send you
small enticing gifts to prove
they are genuine. They may
express a desire to meet you
in person even though they
are usually a long distance
away; possibly even another
country. Having gained the
victim's trust, the fraudster
may ask you for flight money
to visit, or claim to have a
personal emergency in which
they will ask you to send
money. Sometimes they don't
ask, the victim simply feels
compelled to send the money
because they believe they
have a trusting relationship.
Prevent being victim-
ized by the "Romance and
Dating" scam by follow-
ing some simple tips:
• Be suspicious of anyone
who professes their love to
you quickly over the internet.
• Never, under any cir-
cumstances, send money
for any reason.
• Be careful of suspects
working overseas, as this
provides numerous reasons
for them to ask for money.
• If you receive a "pay
cheque" or any other means
of payment from the suspect,
who asks you to cash it and
return the outstanding por-
tion of the funds, don't do it.
It's likely a counterfeit cheque
and you'll be responsible for
any bank fees that result.
We also need to look out
for others. Learn how to
spot the warning signs and
protect your neighbours,
friends and relatives.
• Has your friend, neighbour,
relative been worried and dis-
tressed about a loved one?
• Are they talking about a
good friend or loved one in
another country that is com-
ing to visit or needs help?
• Do they talk about West-
ern Union or MoneyGram?
• Have they been frequent-
ing the bank more often?
• Have they been making
unusual withdrawals both in
amounts and frequency?
• Have they sent large dol-
lar wire transfers to coun-
tries in Africa, Asia or
Eastern Europe?
