Brittany Wil- liams, the events co-ordinator for ASHC, said the evening went well. "There are 90 people here. A few didn't make it due to the weather, but this is great for a February turnout," she said of the gala, which had pre- viouslybeen held in May. The silent auction began at 6:30 p.m. while refreshments were made available. Williams explains there were a lot of great community donations, with over 100 items being donated. With that large num- ber, some of the items were grouped together into pack- ages to create experiences to bid on. There was also a sealed bid auction with items for both auctions lining the walls of the hall. More donations were dis- played in the entrance for a raf- fle draw. Following the dinner, the feature artist and guest speaker for the evening, Puck Merkies of Grand Bend, was intro- duced. Merkies donated a col- lection of her own watercol- ours and canvases to ASHC, and had over 30 of her pieces on offer at the gala. Valerie Gillies Postmedia Network Puck Merkies was a guest speaker at the Magic of Art & Music Auction Gala held Feb. 5 in Clinton by the Alzheimer Society Huron County. Merkies' husband was diagnosed with the disease, so she uses art to help her through the journey with him. She donated over 30 of her paintings to the society for the Gala. "When we first got the diag- nosis, the artist in me reacted and I went home and threw things against the wall," she said at the beginning of her address. Merkies uses her art as a way to cope with the stresses and frustrations of her hus- band's Alzheimer's disease and the progression of his illness. "Anyone who goes home with one of my children, being my paintings, can contact me to get the story behind it. Every one of them has a story," she rtold the crown. The evening's entertain- ment also included Studio C, featuring Scott Chow as well as Jeanette Sears and Michael Crocker. Williams was appreciative that the sponsors for the even- ing had come out. "They have been really sup- portive of the Society," she said. Williams thanked the main local sponsors, Vanden Heuvel Structures Ltd. and Excalibur Insurance, as well as Progres- sive Results Group (PRG), which provided design work. Dylan Bartlett was thanked for his role as the evening's master of ceremonies while VIA Rail Canada was thanked for spon- soring the always -popular train travel donation for the auction.
