was in the air on the last day
of filming in Vanastra, the
former RCAF Base Clinton.
Anyone who watches
CBC's Murdoch Mysteries
would recognize Harris, who
plays Const. George Crab-
tree in the show.
For Still Standing, produc-
ers are on a mission to find
humour in, well, the funniest
of places. Executive producer
Maureen Riley said Canadi-
ans particularly enjoy shows
about themselves - and a
light-hearted half hour is wel-
come relief from some of the
bad news stories in the head-
lines. She said residents of
the towns they visit are "so
open, so welcoming." She
added the Still Standing crew
gets the red carpet treatment
within a hometown welcome
that's special every time.
This crew takes a journey
across Canada to explore
small towns on the ropes
and to meet the people who
remain fiercely proud to call
these towns home, and in
their search came upon the
small southwestern Ontario
town of Vanastra.

Comedians Frazer Young and Steve Dylan were part of the evening's entertainment.
By immersing himself in
the adventure of their every-
day lives, Harris came to
understand their passion
where they live.
"Vanastra is one of the
more interesting places we
have ever been," he told
Postmedia.
By the end of the week, he
said he really felt like he
belonged.
In each community, he
finds enough material to put
an original stand-up comedy
routine for the locals. In the
process, he shows the audi-
ence that no matter what
people face in this vast coun-
try, Canadians love to laugh
at themselves.
Jan Hawley, the economic
development officer for
Huron East, said this had to
be the most exciting thing
that has happened to Vanas-
tra for a very long time. And
that bar is pretty high, con-
sidering this was the place
that many say won the Sec-
ond World War.
This base, which was origi-
nally Norman Tyndall's
40 -hectare (100- acre farm)
became a top secret Royal
Canadian Air Force (RCAF)
station used to train and
supply over 7,000 radar tech-
nicians and support staff for
American, British and Cana-
dian forces during the Sec-
ond World War. It became a

peacetime training facility
for wireless telegraphy. His-
tory tells us this was to be the
perfect place to simulate the
coastal conditions in Britain.
The objective of radar was to
intercept German aircraft
before they reached the
coast of England. British
radar training facilities were
always under threat of Ger-
man bombing, so an alterna-
tive training site was neces-
sary. The site went from
farmland to start-up of train-
ing in only 14 weeks. Roads
and over 40 buildings were
built.
