Have you seen Bernard Brown?
In the late 19th and early
20th century, thousands of
so-called 'home children'
or child migrants were sent
from charity homes in the
U.K. to Canadian house-
holds as domestic servants
and agricultural labourers.
The Huron County Museum
is featuring one of these
children, Bernard Brown,
in our upcoming Migration
Stories Exhibit. At ten years
old, Bernard came to Chis-
elhurst, Tuckersmith Town-
ship to live with William
and Annie Leitch. Bernard
crossed the Atlantic again
when he enlisted with the
161st Battalion during the
First World War, and was
tragically killed in action in
1918.

Bernard's brother Edward
(whom Barnardo's Home
placed with a Bruce County
family, and later lived in
Egmondville), and have
any photographs or stories
to share about Bernard,

acquired photographs of
the Brown boys as children
from Barnardo's, but have
not found any images of
Bernard as a young man.
