Almost three months and
numerous discussions later
Huron County has agreed to
support G2G Rail Trail Inc.
with $70,000.
On Nov 18, 2015 Paul Van-
der Molen requested that the
county sign a partnership
agreement with G2G for the
submission to the Ontario
Municipal Cycling Infrastruc-
ture Program. It was explained
at that time the province
required the county to agree to
fund a percentage of the grant
in the amount of $70,000 in
order for G2G Rail Trail Inc. to
be considered for funding.
G2G reassured council the
county would not be responsi-
ble for the funds. Vander
Molen explained the funds
required would be reallocated
through G2G and county sup-
port would be only to meet
OMCIP requirements.
It was revealed at the Jan.
22 committee meeting that
the OMCIP would not
accept those terms, reiterat-
ing the $70,000 had to really
come from the county.
The total funding request
through the OMCIP would be
$350,800 with $105,800 com-
ing from G2G, $70,000 from
Huron County and $175,000
from the province.
"I know it's an uncomforta-
ble ask, Vander Molen said.
Vander Molen said the
county would only need to
commit to an addition
$34,000 as $36,000 from pre-
vious county funding could
be considered.
Warden Paul Gowing said
he wasn't surprised that the
province was looking for
municipal support. If the prov-
ince is going to support a pro-
ject it was expected that the
municipality support it as well.
Howick Reeve Art Ver-
steeg said he was con-
cerned that G2G Rail Trail
Inc. would ask for more
financial support in the
future, citing that the
request in November came
with reassurance the county
would not be responsible
for the $70,000.
Council voted in favour of
G2G Rail Trail Incs request for
$34,000 additional funds to be
considered for the 2016 budget.
CAO Brenda Orchard said
the county would only allocate
the funds if G2G was successful
in its bid to the OMCIP.
Huron County council has agreed to support G2G Rail Trail Inc. with $70,000 in its bid for funding fro the province.
