Doug Perkes may be gone, but his
name and spirit lives on in the
annual peewee local league tourna-
ment, which is entering its seventh
year in 2016.
The Doug Perkes Memorial will be
touching the ice in Seaforth and
Hensall from February 5-7.
In his memory, Perkes' wife
Heather Percival who is a local doc-
tor from Seaforth established the
Doug Perkes Hockey Fund, a pro-
gram put together to help fund chil-
dren who cannot afford the costs of
hockey. To date, the foundation is
responsible for covering the bills of
43 kids and when every tournament
is finished all the money raised goes
into the fund. Percival said, the last
two years have been relatively suc-
cessful with $7,000 being collected,
usually they draw together about
$5,000-$6,000.
"Doug was not the largest person,
he wasn't the fastest skater, so (this)
idea is also to celebrate those kids who
try really hard, explained Percival
And to respect his requests, the
one's who don't score all the goals, but
contribute to their team through dedi-
cation, the "unsung hero" award will
be given to those players. After each
game there will be three players who
fall into that category. The 72 hours of
hockey will be rewarding for all the
players particapating and also for
Huron County's economy, since 16
teams from all over Southwestern
Ontario are expected to compete.
From last year's reports, the local res-
taurants in the region were "totally
swamped" from players and their
families.
Before Perkes passed away in
2009, well before the tournment's
popularity grew in his memory, this
program was meant to keep youth
engaged in sports and distant from
harm's way.

Seaforth Stars and Plattsville Rage.
"If kids were in sports then they
wouldn't get into trouble, so he
would be really pleased for this espe-
cially because some kids would nor-
mally be hanging around the street
corners," Percival stated, pertaining
to one of the reasons why her late
husband had such a strong passion
for sports.
According to the Seaforth Stars
website the following teams will
compete in the weekend -long event.
