killing of camper in Perth
Four months after a
45 -year-old Lanark County
man was stabbed to death at
Last Duel Park campground
in Perth, Ontario Provincial
Police have arrested a
suspect.
Lanark County OPP said
Sunday that 22 -year-old
Andrew Kravchenko of Perth
was arrested earlier in the
day and is charged with sec-
ond-degree murder in the
death of James "Jake"
Laverdure.
Laverdure was killed
shortly after 4 a.m. last Aug.
7 while camping with his
girlfriend on the banks of the
Tay River at the southeast
edge of Perth.
Campers in the quiet park
said at the time they were
awakened by screams.
"When I woke up I know I
heard a woman screaming
for help," Luc Beaudry,
whose camper was within
sight of the area cordoned
off by police tape, said at the
time.
Another camper, Suzanne
Taillon, said a man and a
woman she assumed were a
married couple had been
staying at the campground
for a little over a week.
"They were very down to
earth and just very nice," she
said.
Laverdure's death was the
first homicide recorded in
the town of 6,000 since
1996, when mother -of -three
Donna Barr and her friend,
Steven Young, were shot to
death in a murder -suicide at
the hands of Barr's

was no danger to the general

The last act of fatal vio-
lence at Last Duel Park may
well have the one that
earned the park its name.
Known as the final fatal and
most -famed duel in Cana-
dian history, it happened
when law students and
friends Robert Lyon and
John Wilson, both in their
early 20s, squared off over
the honour of school-
teacher Elizabeth Hughes
in 1833.
Lyon died of his wounds
and was buried near where
he fell. Wilson, acting as his
own lawyer, was acquitted of
murder and later married
Hughes, who had previously
rebuffed him.
