St. Anne's gids' hockey excelling on the ice
Team recently wins large tournament
in London; hopes to beat out main
competitor, St. Michael, and advance
to WOSAA later in season

Six years ago, the St. Anne's
girls' hockey team was the
worst in the league and now
they are amoung the top teams.
Six years ago, St. Anne's
teacher Steve Geiger started
coaching the team; Geiger
had coached the boys' hockey
team for eight years before
that. Since Geiger started
coaching the girls, they have
accumulated many talented,
committed players and the
team has improved
exponentially.
Most recently, the team won
a large tournament in London
with teams from all across the
province. It was St. Anne's first
time at that tournament.
"We've never gone because
it's two days and it's expensive,"
sad Geiger, "But I thought, you
know what, this year we're
going to go:'
There were two divisions at
the tournament in London. St.
Michael Catholic Secondary
School from Stratford won the
other division; St. Michael is St.
Anne's biggest competitor. The
Stratford school has won gold
at OFSAA for the past two
years.
To qualify for OFSAA, you
must first win WOSAA. To
qualify for WOSAA in this area,
you must win the Huron -Perth
championships. For the past
two years, St. Anne's has won
Huron -Perth silver behind St.
Michael.
However Geiger said the
two teams are close in com-
petition. The two teams
recently played in a tourna-
ment on November 21, and St.
Anne's was up 2-0 at one
point, but ended up losing 3-2
in a shootout. He said that
spectators agreed St. Anne's
had out played St. Michael.
The two teams haven't
played a league game yet this
year, however their first one
will be on January 9 in Strat-
ford. They will also play St.
Michael on Wednesday, Febru-
ary 15 at 1:45 p.m. in Clinton.
Geiger is trying to arrange for
all of St. Anne's to attend this
game, though nothing has
been finalized.
Though they have been una-
ble to advance to WOSAA or
OFSAA due to being in the
same division as St. Michael,
Geiger believes they are one of
the best teams in the province.
This year, if they are able to
beat St. Michael at the Huron -
Perth championships and
advance, they may have the
opportunity to prove that.
Geiger said they have many
strong players.
"This is the deepest team

we've ever had - the whole
team is strong;' he said.
However a few players
stand out. Grade 12 student
Sierra Burt, the team cap-
tain, will be attending Lin-
denwood University in Mis-
souri on a hockey
scholarship next year. Grade
11 student Brooke Schoeder
has already committed to
attending Ivy League school
Dartmouth in New Hamp-

them. Geiger noted that they
also have one of the "best
goalies around", grade 12
student Kaitlyn Chagnon.
He and the girls anticipate a
very competitive season as they
attempt to beat out St. Michael.
