From the front of the building
of the Egmondville United
Church, the smell of delicious
home -cooked food lingered in
the air.
Strawberry icebox cake, BBQ
baked beans and even meals
meticulous, as spaghetti bacon
carbonara were being baked in
the basement of the house of
worship -the kick is children
between the ages of 8 -12 -years -
old created them.
"There are chef schools in
France that take six -year-olds
and let them use the same
knives that we are (using),"
stated Laura Peach from
Blyth. "I didn't want to start
them off that young, but I def-
initely felt an eight-year-old
could do it."
The Kids in the Kitchen Sum-
mer Day Camp is entering its
fourth year since they
launched the program, which
ran from August 15-19. The
Huron -Perth Presbytery Of
United Church of Canada
sponsors the camp.
Peach has the program bro-
ken down in three different
teams. First day they started off
with knife skills, then by baking
bread, so the youngsters get the
hang of following recipe
instructions.
Each day is different, by rotat-
ing from breakfast, lunch and
dinner, while also changing to
oven, stovetop and raw.
Not an unfamiliar person to
food, Peach has a four-year
degree in nutrition from the
University of Western. On
August 18, she showcased
those skills learned in school
by assisting the kids in baking
apple crumble with yogurt flat
bread.
It gives them autonomy in
the kitchen for food choice," she
said.
"Even though they may not
eat the healthy food, they're
still able to make it from
scratch."

The Bethel Bible Church in
Seaforth has been spreading the
word of God for close to 40 years
at the annual Vacation Bible
School.
Crafts, music, story time and
exciting dance moves kept the
children from the area enter-
tained for the week -long -three
hour daily event.
"It gets everybody together in
the community and the kids
have a good time doing it,"
explained Cheryl Bennewies.
