Two-times, Seaforth's on the map nationally
Shaun Gregory
Huron Expositor
On April 1, Jan received an
email saying congratula-
tions; you've won, she
thought this must be an April
Fools joke. However, this
wasn't any shenanigan,
more like a message from
the spokesperson for the
Ontario Business Improve-
ment Area Association.
"The subject line said con-
gratulations, this must be
spam. So I was thinking oh
congratulations you won a
million dollars, click here,
"said the economic develop-
ment officer for Huron East,
Jan Hawley.
Realizing that advertise-
ments often come with a
standard email account
these days, she didn't even
open the message. The next
Monday she received
another message, for a sec-
ond time applauding her
wins.
"I didn't even see the plu-
ral, I just saw win," stated
Hawley at her office in Sea-
forth's town hall.
She then, realized, this
was a reality. They really did
win. Hawley was already
scheduled to speak at the
2016 National BIA Confer-
ence, now she had two
awards to go along with her
speech." The first of the two
was the Special Events &
Promotions award for the
Art Unhinged competition.
The project, which was
launched in 2014, involved
10 artists from across the
county volunteering their
time to build unique artsy
doors. The finished prod-
ucts were then displayed in
the previously empty store-
fronts on Seaforth's main
strip. And then later auc-
tioned off for repairs to the
Seaforth Agriplex.
"It was a reason to come to
the downtown, if you can
keep people in your
downtown for a length of
time, they are probably
going to spend a few dollars,"
Hawley said.
The next award was for
filling those empty units.
The Business Retention
and Expansion program
award was won for the suc-
cessful contest she spear-
headed with a $20,000
budget, known as "Win
this Space." In total, Sea -
forth walked away with two
of the six awards that were
handed out at the
conference.
"Knowing we can com-
pete at a national level and
come out on top is very grat-
ifying," said Hawley. "With
the OBIAA creating a plat-
form for such achievements,
business groups in rural
Ontario are able to show-
case the innovative work
being undertaken in their
communities. For that, I am
grateful, as is the
municipality."
