Life is a GPS
For Such A
Time As This
Pastor Laurie Morris
Over the past year and a half
I've driven a lot of kilome-
tres compared to what I
was used to for so many years.
Not only have there been the
frequent trips to Seaforth, but
also to churches in Sarnia and
Hamilton.
As well Anne and I travelled a
long distance into the Southern
U.S. in order to fly to Belize to
see our family there, and we
took an extended time travelling
across from Texas to Florida
before we returned home.
And last April I got a part time
job which I had never done
before and that is shuttling vehi-
cles for a car dealership which is
constantly taking in vehicles from
across the country and then mov-
ing
oving them out to other dealers.
Thus I have travelled a lot of
places where I have never ever
been before and have learned to
rely upon a gadget that we
didn't have until a few years ago,
a portable GPS unit.
So today, as I was driving up
to Seaforth in the fog I was
thinking about how that small
screen stuck onto my wind-
shield in front of me helps me to
get to my destination.
The goal in using a GPS unit is
to set the target of the destina-
tion that one wants to arrive at
on that day so that it will map
out a route that will get one
there expeditiously.
But there are a lot of variables
that come into play.
First, you have to make sure
that you have truly entered the
right address where you want to
go. It is very easy to put in the
wrong city with the same street
address or to accidentally hit a
previous 'favourite' or 'recent des-
tination' and find out that when
you are starting out the voice
coming out of the device is want-
ing to take you a different direc-
tion than what would deliver you
to the intended destination.
Second, you have to make sure
that the GPS module has indeed
found connection with the satel-
lites that enable it to know where
you are indeed located at the
present moment so that the
route is accurate. More than
once I have had to wait a while
for the unit to actually make con-
nection with the satellites.
Third, you must have up to
date maps. My previous GPS did
not have a map upgrade service,
so it was stuck not 'knowing'
that the Red Hill Expressway, a
crucial bypass around Hamilton
Ont. existed. It was always funny
www.seaforthhuronexpositor.com
to me to see the screen show
that I was plowing through
farmer's fields down the Niagara
Escarpment and 'the voice' tell
me to turn left or right, when in
reality I was on a superhighway.
But the key factor is that hav-
ing punched in the destination
and knowing that the GPS is con-
necting with the satellites, you
have to actually trust its direc-
tions and travel on the route it is
giving you. The one I have now
even gets warnings of traffic
slowdowns and begins to recom-
mend an alternate route to avoid
the congestion or accident
ahead.
When I make a conscious
decision to leave the route it is
recommending, say for a rest
stop or some other reason, the
voice in the unit tries to get me
back on to the road that is sup-
posed to deliver me to where I
told it I wanted to go.
If I continue to go 'astray' after
some attempts to get me back
on to the route that it had
mapped out, but seeing I am
continuing down another path,
it then comes up with another
way to my destination based on
where I have moved.
You know there is a great
analogy here to our lives.
Many people travel their life-
times aimlessly without a pur-
pose or destination in mind. The
letter to the editor
Welcome to our new "class based" energy policy.
To the Editor,
A few weeks ago I wrote about
the second class (maybe now
3rd class) status afforded to
rural Ontario. The gov't had just
released new contract approvals
for wind development in com-
munities that had voted
resoundingly against it, while
mouthing the words "they
would not force these upon
communities that didn't want
them': It was particularly outra-
geous given the fact we are
already over committed with
long term electricity contracts.
I don't want to over use opin-
ion space but I want to point out
how many shoes (stinky ones)
have dropped since that letter. It
explains much about what's
going on. First the Toronto Star
broke from its usual "make nice
to the Liberals" policy and
stated their ministers had party
fundraising quotas to be
achieved by peddling influence
to those who might profit.
I think the stench from the too
frequent $6000/plate dinners was
a bit much for even the Star to
ignore. Anyone who has watched
this gov't was aware of favours
returned. The long list of financial
scandals over the years from
E -Health to ORNGE to the gas
plants and now the Green Energy
Act can't possibly be attributed to
that much incompetence. The
Liberals head into every election
with a massive war chest for real
reasons, if not savoury ones.
Second revelation was last
week's PC Party press release
showing the latest Green Energy
approvals with seven corpora-
tions receiving lucrative con-
tracts after contributing a com-
bined $255,000 to the Liberal
Party. Two applicants that
made $0 contribution and
received 0 contract offers. Looks
bad, smells familiar.
The third revelation came out
when it was revealed that the
wind project forced upon Dut-
ton/Dunwich (despite having
already voted 84% against it)
occurred because the developer
had partnered with aboriginal
bands in northern Ontario to get
"the points" it needed for
approval.
The three native groups that
lived in the area were not sup-
portive of the wind development.
Southem Ontario native bands
have often been at the front of
wind development protests prob-
ably due to the wildlife and habi-
tat destruction often seen. So the
Chicago based corporation
shopped around till it found
opportunistic native partners
with the federal money these
bands can access. The fact that
these groups were 1000's of miles
to the north of those who have to
live with the project and that the
real (non-native) residents are
offered no partnerships, or fund-
ing, was irrelevant apparently.
Welcome to our new "class
based" energy policy.
The fourth bit of craziness the
Liberal gov't announced itself.
While electricity demand drops
Bible tells us that each of us was
'fearfully and wonderfully
made' and that each of us has a
purpose in this life as we travel
intentionally towards the eternal
destination that awaits us.
And a lot of people these days
don't realize that there is a GPS
system to enable us to find our
way along life's route to the final
destination. That GPS system is
God's revelation to us of his will
for us and how we are to live, the
Word of God, the Bible, which is
actively communicated to us by
the faithful witness and working
of God's presence in those who
have trusted Him, the Holy Spirit.
But to go on the journey of life
in the direction you were
intended to go, you have to turn
on the GPS, find out that God will
indeed set his spirit within us
when we trust in Him and start
going on the route with Him.
And the route He will map out
for each of us will be the most ful-
filling ride that we could ever take.
Years ago, when I was a young
lad, I entered on that road with
Him by receiving the gift of His
grace through his son, Jesus
Christ, and it has been a wonder-
ful ride in the 56 years since I did.
You can begin that ride as
well, by getting a New Testa-
ment, reading the gospel of John
and responding to God's offer to
you of being your living GPS.
and costly exports grow, next
year's round of wind contracts
will actually be doubled. Woohoo!
I guess when you see how much
revenue can be generated for the
party while the electricity costs
are downloaded to ratepayers,
why give up a good thing? Any-
one who opposes this can now
just be called, NIMBY racist cli-
mate deniers, by Liberal leader-
ship that attends the Machiavelli
School of Fine Government.
Any wonder why electricity
rate increases were just
announced yesterday....for the
third time since November? Any
wonder why while Ontario elec-
tricity rates shot from the lowest
to the highest in North America
and why imported natural gas is
now so popular here? Any won-
der why Ontario has accumulated
a $300 billion debt for our chil-
dren while selling off the public
assets paid for by our parents?
Sincerely,
Robert Budd 519-524-8097
