Allan Thompson donation to offset carbon footprint from election campaign
Allan Thompson, the fed-
eral Liberal candidate in
Huron -Bruce in the recent
election, has made a dona-
tion to the Maitland Valley
Conservation Authority to
help offset the carbon foot-
print caused by driving
thousands of kilometres
while on the campaign
trail.
Thompson shared details
about his carbon offset
donation at Wednesday's
meeting of the executive of
the Huron -Bruce Federal
Liberal Association. Earlier
in the day, he met with Phil
Beard, general manager of
the Maitland Valley Conser-
vation Authority (MVCA) at
the authority's office in
Wroxeter to make the
donation.
"Prime Minister Justin
Trudeau and his govern-
ment have made clear that
addressing climate change is
one of the key challenges of
our time, " Thompson said.
"That's why it appealed
to me when Mr. Beard
suggested back during the
election campaign that I
should use the Authority's
`footprints to forests' cal-
culator to figure out the
number of trees to plant to
compensate for the fossil
fuel I burned during the
campaign," Thompson
said.
On its FootprintsToFor-
ests.com website, the con-
servation authority
explains that your carbon
footprint is the greenhouse
gas emissions released by
typical aspects of your life-
style, such as vehicle fuel
use. Trees help to reduce
the impacts of climate
change and also provide
other benefits such as bio-
diversity and improved
water quality.
During the 11 -week elec-
tion campaign - one of the
longest in Canadian history
- Thompson put about
13,000 kilometres on his
vehicle, a 2014 Jeep Com-
pass. According to the car-
bon footprint calculator,
which factors in the vehicle
type and fuel consumption,
Thompson's campaigning
resulted in 3.28 tonnes of
CO2 emission. So he
needed to pay for the plant-
ing of 10 trees at a cost of
$55 to help compensate for
his carbon footprint.
Beard said that the
MVCA will plant the trees
at one of its conservation
areas. He also explained
that the footprint calcula-
tor compensates for the
CO2 emission over the
growing period of the tree
throughout its lifetime. So
that would be 0.3/tonnes
of CO2 based on the aver-
age rate of softwood or
hardwood tree growth.
The calculator has been
set up that way to encour-
age more people to take
part in the program, he
said.
"Climate change and
how we deal with it will be
the defining issue of our
generation and the next,"
Beard said.
