Jeopardize and pho-
tosynthesis had Brenda
Wilkinson, president of
the Optimist Club in
Seaforth shaking her
head in disbelief that
some Grade 5's were
capable of spelling
such articulate words
at the 2016 Spelling
Bee competition.
Equipped with writ-
ing utensils and
intense memory skills,
five kids from the area
not yet old enough to
be considered teenag-
ers battled head-to-
head in a spell off.
They practiced day in
and day out, by review-
ing the Optimist Club
International website,
which displays all the
words to study.
Since January these
young bucks have been
.,41(
WINTER
preparing to see who's
who in the universe of
spelling. Spread out
accordingly in the
Optimist Club hall,
each youth waited with
patience for each word
to be announced with
all hopes of getting all
the letters correct. In
the 10 years of putting
on the event, Wilkin-
son said this particular
Spelling Bee stuck out
significantly.
"We went seven
rounds because there
was a tie all the way
through," stated
Wilkinson.
"We've never had
that happen before."
Next year's competi-
tion is set to take place
in Clinton Ont.
Brenda Wilkinson,
president of the Optimist
Club, stands next to Lucas
Preszcator ,11, from
Clinton who proved he had
what it takes as he won
the 2016 Optimist Club
Spelling Bee competition.
