SURVEY COMPLETED Engineer Brannen and his staff of surveyors have .completed the survey of the 'proposed Huron and Ontario Electric road. Mr. Brannell reports that there are na serious difficulties to construction from one end of the line to the other, and in the few places that it will be necessary to depart from tbe highway the owners of the private pro- _ perty have in every case offered the right of way through their fields, for a nominal sum, and in knee cases absolutely free. A splendid water power is obtainable at or near God- erich, so- that steam will not need to be used at all, except possibly in, one point at the eastern end. As soon as he has completed his report, some de- finate action will be taken by the pro- po-sed construction company. A DANGEROUS PRACTICE. A bicycle carrying in front of the rider -a small child .in a basket arrang- ed for the purpose, struck an obstruc.• tion on one of the streets in Philadel- phia the other day, and the child was thrown forward on its head on the hard pavement and instantly killed. The authorities _ now hold the.. parent of the child, who was the rider of the bicycle, for manslaughter. Such a practice & frequently noticed in the village, and iti the condition of our streets, the parent of the child who attempts such a thing, no matter how careful he may be, is very foolish, and the habit shonld.be- stepped before • an accident occurs. . Another reason why it should be stopped, and one- that will probably be a surprise to all who indulge in the 'practice, is, so says a promin- ent physician, that it is calculated to produce a disorder- of the- brain, which tna'y be fatal sooner or later to the child. , TEETH -Thule with a view 44. preserving the naturat. appearanoe. and of' the best qualitj. In.Canada,, under the Union Act, 1867, divorce is one of the subjects assigned to the Federal Parliament. • As, howerer, seine .of the provinces had established divorce courts before Confederation. they were permitted to contiffne the jurisdiction which was Conferred upon their courts. These rovinces are: Nova Scotia, New Brunswick-, Prinee Edward 'Island, and' British Cohimbia, In Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba and the Northwest Tearitories they can only be obtained:by legislation—an act of the Parliment of Canada being necessary. The statir- tics show that since Confederation 211 divorces have been granted, of which 54 were 'of the Doraieion Parliament and 157 by the several provincial Courts. A FALSE REPORT To the Editor of the Sentinel DEAR Sue—There is ji(report going around the country that Mr. Baxter, of the townehip of Ashfield, who lost his out -buildings by lightning a few weeks ago, had his .buildings insured in the London Mutual Fire Insurance omgany and that the Company re - to pay hinr/for any implements ed in the fire because it did implements in barns. Now ma this report. In the destr not insu I wish to first place Mr. Baxter's property was notinsured in th endon Mutual at all ond in this co any his imple- ments would have be • covered as general contents, whe r in barn, stable or drive house. All rm pro- duce and implements :are incl d in the words "contents of outbuildt s" by the London -Mutual. I would no trouble you with this only other agents, who know better' , are trying to make people believe that it is the Company that I have the " honor to -represent, refuse to pay for implements. HURON APPLE CROP To the-2ditor of the Globe Sir, -.—In• your issue of the 15th inst., reviewing the trops, and especially in the item referring to the apple crop, I observe it, !dated that "the crop in some - sections is so great that it is feared the fruit will not he large enough to export." In the same item it: is cor- rectiy estimated that the counties of Kent and Huron are credited with nearly a million berrels. In case buyers al:mold conclude that Huron is one of the sections where the fruit is: small and unfit for export, I desire to assure them such is not the case. Our crop is doubtless about -half a mullion narrols,:and even at this early date the average, size of , export - varieties is fully up to- what in past years been branded best. -Growers as a rule here take geed 'care of, their orchards in the way of trimming, man- uring and cultivation. In most orch- ards pigiare allowed to run all 'season. Doubtless it will be found that where orchards have been neglected .:and are loaded with fruit the sample will be small. So fer as this section is con- cerned, there is now no doubt that our expert apples will at picking• time be of an unusually large average size, not- withstanding the great crop; exceed- ingly clean, of fine form and excellent color. Picking will begin two or three weeks earlier than usual, and I am sure, with proper care on the part of the packers and shippers, our apples will do Canada honor in all respects in any market in the world; and as the superior keeping quality of apples from this district is well known I feel sure the crop will, as it should, command. a good price even in glutted Markets.
