- A WHOLE FAMILY POISONED
. Some- four or five weeks ago i a child
belonging to Mr. 'Richard Johnstone,
of Amabel, Bruce county, died. The
cause of death was supposed to have
been the 'Use of milk given- by cows
that had eaten some poisonous - plant
While pasturing on the flats of the
Sauble river. After the. death 'of the
'
chikl the family' ceased using the milk
but itappears have used the butter
made from the milk. 'About two
weeks ago' Mrs. Johnston was taken
sick from the seine Cause, iind, Dr. F.
Campbell, of . Hepworth was called,
and succeeded in getting her out of
danger, but a few days ago a, relapse
-set- in and she was agaift taken sick,
along with her was his husband and
his father. Dr. 'Campbell Was again
called . as was also Dr. Gintly, of
Wiarton,-but the poor woman was be-
yond medical aid and died on Tuesday
morning. At the time of writing, the
other patients are progressing fs,vorable'
Mr: Johnston sr. is a1togeth6. out of
danger, and if no relapse occurs' a
couple of days will see Richard outof
danger.
What particular plant it is that has
such deadly effects cannot be accurate- .
ly determined, as no medical authors
speak of it to.any extent Veterinar-
ians .claim it to. be a sort of fungoid
growth that is left on -the 'grass -wh
thewaterin the river gets low.
_remarkable feature of itseffect oll:1
cattle eating it, is, that the young I
stock die, while in cows giving milk. .
the- poison comes away in -th milk..
It is a vegetable poisoil, and chemical. -
analysis, no matter how severe the test
cannot detect the least. trace of it.
The deaths resulting from this pOison-
ous weed, new number seven or. eight,
and_as far as we can learn, these cases
in Amabel are the first in Ontario.
